Just reporting that I added the news option to Outlook 2003 and had the same
problem reported in other posts. After adding the option to the 'Go' menu, I
started the news reader and it wanted me to set Outlook 2003 to be my
default reader. I answered yes. After closing the reader, it dissapeared
from my Outlook 2003 menu. I had to go to internet options and reset the
default reader to outlook express to get it back. The next time I started
the reader I ignored the Set Default message, unchecked the notify check box
and answered no.
It seems that this is a configuration or installation bug. I could not find
a KB article on the subject, so maybe one needs to be posted to the
knowledge base. I also would like to note that the installation of Outlook
2003 removed my newsreader from the IE menu, but adding it in OL 2003 put it
back on IE as well.
