Outlook 2003 in exchange cache mode does synchronize the delete items folder

S

Sabo, Eric

Build is 11.5608.5703 on Windows XP SP1.

Is there a reason for this? Outlook will synchronize every other folder
besides this on. We are trying to recover delete items.

R

Roady [MVP]

Make sure the folder is selected for synchronisation;
Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Setup-> button Send/Receive-> button Edit->
select Exchange Account

Roady,
I checked everything like you suggested, the deleted items are setup
just like the other folders that are working.

If I got to the synchronization tab of the delete items it shows the
following:
Server folder contains 13 item(s)
Offline folder contains 0 item(s)

Would there be any group policies that might effect this?

R

Roady [MVP]

Sounds like something went wrong during a synchronisation. Delete the
ost-file from the profile and let it resynch with Outlook again.

Hi Sabo,

First I'd like to confirm with you by default Outlook 2003 will synchronize
the Deleted Items folder in Cached Exchange Mode.

So here please help me clarify following points:

1. Did any error message appear?
2 Was there anything logged in Synchronization log?

Next, please check whether you have enabled any filter for Deleted Items
folder. You may refer to the steps below:

1. Right-click Deleted Items, and click Properties.
2. Select Synchronization tab, click Filter button to check the status.
3. Check the Statistics for this folder.

In addition to Roady's suggestion, I suggest you create a new profile and
you can refer to this Knowledge Base article:

829918 How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2003 --
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918

If anything is unclear, please feel free to post.

Terry,
This doesn't not work in our environment for some reason.

1. No errors - I even enable logging within Outlook, nothing in that log
either.
2. Nothing in the synchronization log

I have checked the stats for the delete items folder. It show there are
items on the server side but nothing on the client side. Log on the
mailbox using OWA and the delete items do show up.

I have tried that on this test account and still nothing.

Do you have any other suggestions? It works on my account using my
workstation but when I log onto this other mailbox on my workstation it will
not allow you to recover delete items (meaning they will never show up in
the deleted items folder). The only other thing is that this account does
have a group policy, would this have any affect on why it does not work.

Hi,

Because this issue doesn't occur on your account, I believe the issue
should relate to the user account. Here, I would like to offer you two
suggestions:

1. Create a new user with the same Group Policy to check the issue again.
2. Remove the Group Policy from the bad user to check the issue again.

If you have any progresses, please let me know.

Have a nice day!

Terry,
Here is what I did.

Move this particular user to the users container (no group policy applied),
at this point the user can recover deleted items - Outlook 2003 is
functioning correctly.

When the user account is in the OU with the group policy applied it doesn't
not work.
Outlook 2003 settings applied in the policy. (ENABLED)
Folder size display
Empty Deleted Items Folder
Warm before permanently deleting items
Autoarchive settings - disabled
retention settings - disabled
Junk email protection level - HIGH
Tracking options
Process requests and responses on arrival - Enabled
Process receipts on arrival - Enabled
Delete Blank voting - Disabled
Request a read receipt - Disabled
Request delivery rcpt - Disabled
When outlook is asked to repsond - Always send a
response

From these settings there shouldn't be nothing to restrict an user to be
able to recover delete items. Do you have any suggestions on what to look
for?

Hi,

Thank you for posting back and I am glad to hear that we have made some
progresses.

Based on the test result, I believe the issue should relate to the Group
Policy. Please disable or enable the settings one by one to narrow down the
issue. I believe it is the efficient way to determine the root cause.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Terry,
Do you have a suggestion to which on? Can you look in the Microsoft
internal database to see what may cause this issue? Why would this change?

S

Sabo, Eric

Terry,
It seems like it is a combination of all of these group policy settings.
Can you check internally if anyone else has reported this problem?
Internally you should be able to reproduce this problem.

Hi Sabo,

It is nice to hear from you again.

I have check our internal database for more information. Unfortunately, I
am unable to find more information related. Let's narrow down the issue and
I will doc this issue in our database.

Thank you for your report on this issue.

60Terry,
60 It seems like it is a combination of all of these group policy
settings.
60Can you check internally if anyone else has reported this problem?
60Internally you should be able to reproduce this problem.

Terry,
Can you reproduce this on your end? I disable them one by one but
nothing happend, I still couldn't sync the delete items folder.

If you send me email to (e-mail address removed) , I would be more than glad to
give you my group policy results from this particular user and computer.
Then you can determine what combination of settings is effecting this.

Hi,

It is nice to hear from you again. Currently, I am unable to reproduce this
issue on my side.

Please send me the detailed GP results at (e-mail address removed). Let's
perform further test on this issue. In addition, please try one more test:

1. Create a new user, apply the same GP.
2. Test the issue again.

Please let me know the result. I appreciate your time and effort on
performing the test!

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terry Liu

Guest

Terry,
We are experiencing this same problem. We have added our policies one at a time to determine which policy is causing this issue and we have narrowed it down to the Empty Deleted Items folder upon Exit setting. With that policy checked, recovered deleted items will not appear in the Deleted Items folder while in cached mode. Yet, if we just check the option on the client with the policy off, we do not have this problem.

Please advise.

60Terry,
We are experiencing this same problem. We have added our policies one at a
time to determine which policy is causing this issue and we have narrowed
it down to the Empty Deleted Items folder upon Exit setting. With that
policy checked, recovered deleted items will not appear in the Deleted
Items folder while in cached mode. Yet, if we just check the option on the
client with the policy off, we do not have this problem.

Please advise.

Terry,
I want these settings enabled in my group policy. We have been using
them since Outlook XP. Can you see if Microsoft is going to correct this
problem? Why would this cause this behavior, is it because we are running
in cached exchange mode?
