Outlook 2003 hangs when sending/receiving eMail

I've recently been wrestling with this problem with Outlook 2003 and
I've had no success in figuring out a solution. I'd appreciate any
suggestions or ideas anyone here can offer.

I'm using Outlook 2003 for a managing about a half dozen POP3 Internet
eMail accounts. I connect over a home-based local area network. This
network configuration has not been changed recently and has worked
reliably for the better part of the past 3 years (I previously used
Outlook 2000 but have been using Outlook 2003 since last December).

I think I've isolated when the problem occurs, but not the cause.
Whenever I check eMail, Outlook shows the "Send/Receive Status" message
at the bottom of the application window but it never progresses or
completes the process of checking for mail. When I right-click on the
message area and select either of the popup menu choices, "Cancel
Send/Receive" or "Details," Outlook crashes with the error message:
"Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."

One of the things that I did try was creating a new profile, based on a
suggestion that I read here. In fact, with my previous profile Outlook
crashed almost immediately upon loading with the same error dialog box
as noted above. It was only through creation of a second profile that
includes only one of the eMail accounts I use that I was able to get
Outlook to complete the loading process. From there, I was able to
isolate the problem (I think) to when Outlook checks for mail. Whenever
I use the old profile, Outlook continues to crash almost immediatlely
upon loading.

This problem first occurred on Friday evening and at the time I noticed
the icon that appears in the Windows notification area when Outlook is
synchronizing folders was there and never went away. After waiting more
than 10 minutes for the synchronizing process to conclude, I used Task
Manager to kill the Outlook process. Ever since, I've been having a
problem with Outlook 2003 crashing when it loads (or when it checks for
eMail using the slimmed-down profile).

For the record, in search for a solution, I tried upgrading to Office
2003 Service Pack 1. When that didn't eliminate the problem, I tried
uninstalling Outlook 2003, rebooted, and then reinstalled OL2003 (with
applying the Service Pack), but the behavior remains the same. It was
only after reinstalling that I set up the second profile and used that
to narrow down what appears to be happening.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

DRW:

couple of thoughts.

If you haven't done this and do it regularly, run spybot and adware. both
are free, but send $$ because they are good shareware programs. I run both
not because I am anal, but since they don't always catch the same things. I
was having a similar hang problem and this "fixed" it. I find that whenever
I have done substantial surfing and then go back to e-mail I have this issue
periodically.

Also, how big is your inbox/outbox. It you haven't tried this, check the
inbox integreity with an inbox repair tool.

When was the last time you defraged and/or ran norton utilities or equvalent
to check for mislinked stuff.

I keep most of my e-mails for clients etc and as such my e-mail is large.
If I don't do a bit of maitenance, it gets grumpy

Just my take and your mileage may vary
