Outlook 2003 hangs on closing

I am running Outlook 2003 and Windows XP. Recently, upon closing, Outlook
will still appear in the taskbar and when I check the task manager it will
still be running. If I reopen Outlook and then File -> Exit out of Outlook it
will then terminate.

What is causing this? How do I fix it?
