Outlook 2003/Exchange 5.5

We have just started using Outlook 2003. On every system
so far, we notice that when Outlook is started, it takes 4
minutes to connect to the email server, Exchange 5.5. We
are using the caching feature, so Outlook comes up, we can
see the mail in the cache, but it takes a good 4 minutes
to actually contact the mail server and bring in new mail
messages. When I take the check mark off the use cache
feature, the Outlook box comes up, but hangs the 4 minutes
it is taking to connect to the server.

This is only happening with Outlook 2003, as XP, 2000 work
correctly. We are wondering if it has anything to do with
our Exchange server being so old, version 5.5, with this
new version of Outlook.

In the status bar on the bottom right, it says trying to
connect when Outlook first comes up.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think it does have to do with the Exchange Serve you are using. In the
requirements for OL2K3 it states Exchange 2000 or 2003. I had a problem
also, but once upgrading all severs to SBS2K3 the OL's are working
outstanding.

If you have under 75 users, I would suggest looking into Small Business
Server 2003 Premium. Gives you Server 2K3, exchange 2K3, IIS, SQL 2000 etc
all in one packet and for a much cheaper cost than buying it all full blown.
I am a non-profit and goit it through TechSoup with 50 users for under $100.

Does it connect faster if you add the exchange server to the hosts file?

Hold control and click on the outlook icon in the tray, the choose
Connection status. it may give you some clues as to where the problem is.

I also suggest posting in the exchange server newsgroup if hosts doesn't
help.

I added the server to the hosts file and it does connect
much faster.

I will try the control key to see if I can find the
problem.

But in the meantime, the hosts file will work until we
upgrade to Exchange 2003, I'm sure this problem will go
away.

Thanks!
