Exchange / Outlook sands of time

Hello,

We are a very small operation consisting of 4 clients and an SBS 2003
server. We just got the new system up after migrating from server 2000
/ exchange 5.5. We are experiencing quite a bit of performance
problems concerning exchange. Outlook clients frequently experience
what has been termed "sands of time" which periodically lock up
outlooks for minutes at a time. The Oulook icon in the taskbar will
proudly display that it is "requesting data from the exchange server".
Completely frustrating. Does anyone have suggestions for a newbie of
places I can start trying to track down this problem. Thanks in
advance.

If you use Outlook 2003, enable cached mode.

What version of Outlook are you using? You should double-check your DNS
settings on your network. What you're describing would typically mean
network problems; can you tell us more about your network? 100Mbit switches
to the desktops?

Also tell us about your server, how much RAM. How much free disk space?

Aloha,

Thanks for the replys. We certainly apprecaite it.

I am hoping it is that easy. I have included some information about
our network and computer. We basically have our server setup with two
nic cards. One internal (plugged into a router) one external (plugged
into a DSL modem). The server is also being used as a firewall (along
with the router). All clients are using Outlook 03 with cached mode
enabled. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

A little about our network:
SBS 03 SP1
Athlon xp 3000+
2.00 GB of Ram
10g free space on c:
135g free space on d:

Lanwench - We are using outlook 03, and do have cached mode enabled.
Have tried it both ways with no difference.

I suggest you post in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs. And you don't
mention whether you're using ISA, but if you aren't, I suggest you install a
good hardware firewall appliance in use between your router & network. I
personally don't like relying on the firewall in the server.
