Outlook 2003 crashing/not closing

M

Mike

I am having ongoing, though random, problems with Outlook 2003 crashing and
not closing. In a recent post the following were listed as reasons for it
not closing:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

I only have item 1 (Palm HotSync manager) running, and closing that does not
solve the problem. What concerns is me a) the problem is random and b) it
is getting worse (it happens more frequently). Hardware info: P IV 3ghz,
1.5gb RAM, 160gb HD. OS info: WinXP Pro SP2, running NSW 2005 (email
scanning disabled), ZoneAlarm Pro (5.5.062.004), and PGP 8.1. Any
suggestions or information would be appreciated.

This is going to sound like a lousy answer, but can you temporarily
uninstall NWS 2005 and ZoneAlarm? (Go with the built-in firewall
temporarily and see if the situation improves. The reason that I ask is
that both offer e-mail scanning and to be absolutely sure, the best thing is
to remove just incase disabling the feature isn't enough.)

The problem happened before I installed NWS 2005, so that's not the problem.
And I have already done a clean uninstall of ZA - no impact. I thought the
problem might be related to PGP, but neither disabling nor removing it
helped. I am wondering if the problem could be related to Business Contact
Manager.

By the way, when Outlook loses its mind it should be posting something to
the event logs about the crash. If you can post the relevant entries that
describe the crash/bucket numbers, I might be able to run that info by some
folks in MS after the holidays.

Have you tried disabling MSN Messenger integration?

I had a problem with Outlook 2003 freezing beyond saving. I couldn't even
End Task. Had to turn the computer off to recover. For me this would happen
when starting. It would load the Outlook Today, and that's as far as it
would go. After disabling the Messenger integration, it never happened
again.

Tools>Options, Other tab, at the bottom. I unchecked "Enable the Person
Names Smart Tag," and "Display Messenger Status in the From field" boxes.

Neo,

Thanks. I had tried searching using some of the info from the event log but
came up empty - here's the text from it though:
