Outlook 2003 crashes on opening

G

Guest

Hi
I have the administrator account on this machine (not networked, 5 users, XP
Pro and Office Pro). I have accepted all required Office updates. The other
users have no problem opening and using Outlook.

When I attempt to open Outlook it crashes with the "has encountered a
problem" message. I have tried accepting the "open in safe mode" option -
crashes again. Have also accepted the "repair" option - nothing happens.

I have tried all of the above with no Anti-Virus running, but the same
happens. My .pst file is around 500mb.

I'd be very grateful for any help/suggestions...

Thanks and regards

What is being logged to the Event Viewer?
Locate outcmd.dat and rename it to .old

Thanks Roady

Tried renaming the outcmd as suggested, then tried opening Outlook
(accepting the suggestion to use safe mode).

It crashed and the Event viewer shows 2 error events:

1. Accepted Safe Mode action : Microsoft Office Outlook.

2.Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.8118.0, stamp 456628bf,
faulting module mlang.dll, version 6.0.2900.2180, stamp 411096ad, debug? 0,
fault address 0x00017af2.

I tried using the link within the event log (For more information, see Help
and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.) but that
gave me a another "has encountered an error and must close message".

mlang.dll is a component of Internet Explorer. What version of IE are you
using and do you have all updates applied?

And Outlook works correctly for all other users on that computer? Given the
fact that the Help and Support Center also crashes I would almost suspect it
to be an issue with IE for that user. When you run Outlook in safe mode it
loads without user customizations except for the mail profile. You could try
it with a new mail profile and otherwise start resetting IE settings for
that user;

Success! Thanks for the advice Roady. Looks like a single email in my Inbox
contained Chinese (?) characters which caused Outlook to crash

Here's what I did, in case it's of use to anyone else:
- set up a new profile using the process described in
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/newprofile.htm, and using the "Prompt for a
profile to be used" option
- open Outlook and select the new profile
- right click on Personal Folders and select "Open Outlook data file..."
- choose my "old" .pst file
- select the Personal Folders associated with this "old" pst file and check
each sub-folder in turn
- all the folders within this were fine except the Inbox, which caused
Outlook to crash each time it was highlighted
{now for the tricky bit}
- right click on the Inbox (this didn't cause a crash) and select Advanced
Find
- within the Advanced Serach dialog, search the Inbox for known/expected
emails and either move them to a new folder or delete them
- I finally found one email that contained Chinese (?) characters in the
title. After deleting this, I could open the folder without any crashes.

Thanks again for your help - much appreciated!
