Outlook 2003 contact list to Outlook 2007 address book

Outlook 2007 doesn't recognize my Outlook 2003 contact list as an address
book. The box in the properties area where one can designate a contact list
as an address book is grayed out.

What do you mean by "Outlook 2003 contact list?" The term "contact list" has
no meaning in Outlook's context.
The fact that you preceded it with a different Outlook version implies that
you somehow migrated Outlook 2003 data to Outlook 2007? Did you? If so, that
fact and the method you used to do so would be highly relevant.
Post as if we aren't there watching what you did. Because we aren't. You

I am sorry to be so ill-informed. On my computer, there is a little box that
says "Contacts" so I stupidly assumed that meant "contact list." I'll attempt
to be more accurate in the future.

As for more information, I have a lot, but I doubt you want it all. I bought
a laptop with Vista Home Premium. My husband transferred my files from my
desktop to the laptop after we installed Outlook 2007 on the laptop. My list
of addresses (which is found under the little box that says "Contacts" )is
there, but I cannot designate it as an address book, thus I have no address
book. When I try to add a distribution folder or I click on "To" when sending
a new email, no names show. I suspect that we made a mistake in transferring
the data from one computer to the next.

I have used the laptop since February, but have had no time to address this
problem in anything but a desultory manner until today. At this point, I'm
not sure it wouldn't be faster and easier to create a completely new address
book or contact list or whatever it's called. I'd love some gentle guidance
in whatever direction I need to take.

Did you happen to look at look at the instructions on how to configure the
Outlook Address Book?
