Outlook 2003 - Cached Exchange Mode v/s .ost file

Hi,

Can anyone enlighten me on the difference between the
Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook 2003 and the
traditional .ost file.

If I have an Exchange Mailbox set to be my deliver
location and am running off an ost file, do I still need
to setup the Cached Exchange Mode.

If you are happy with the way you are using then "why change" :), the major
differences I would say is that cached mode will be quicker (especially if
your org is using Exchange 2003), you have in excess of 2GB and the junk
mail filter will only work in cached mode, also if you regularly drop in and
out of the network then cached mode will handle this gracefully.

Hi,

I am having a lot of difficulties with Outlook 2003 off
Exchange 2000 and am trying to figure out a workaround by
better understanding some of the new features in Outlook
2003 (Cached Exchange for instance).

Where does the Cached Exchange Mode store the offline
copy of the mailbox. Does it write to a .ost file again.
If so, why bother having a sparate offline file.

Yes cached mode stores a copy of your mailbox locally and I feel its better
to think of it as Outlook 2003 version of the offline file but with big
differences such as there is no decision to starting Outlook in offline or
online mode, with the old ost then synchronisation only happens at preset
intervals, cached mode takes advantage of low bandwidth conditions, with
Outlook 2003 you are always working with the ost which reduces time
consuming sync's with Exchange.

What sort of problems are you having as my main Outlook 2003 mailbox is
connecting to an Exchange Server 2000 without problem!

Cached mode is like offline mode, but uses the OST all the time. In other
words, for Outlook 2003, the OST is kept synchronized all the time instead
of just at disconnect time.

I keep getting a status of Offline although the vpn
connection is fine.

And once offline the users cannot access the Global
Address list in Exchange.

If they have downloaded the address book they should be able to access the
GAL, does it connect back okay and is the connection dropping random

Cp,

Cached mode uses an .OST, as well. I would switch to cached mode, it
solved a lot of problems around rules for me.
