Outlook 2003 and importing .pst files

G

Guest

I am using Outlook 2003 and i exported my .pst file including all sub-folders
and saved in on a cd.

I subsequently re-built my PC and when I try to import the .pst file I only
get the folders but not the e-mails. The .pst file is 650MB but when i import
it to outlook the mail folder is only tiny with just the folders and not the
e-mails.

Any help or advice?

hello,
i have done this many times, hopefully it will work for u also. don't import
them using outlook.

try copying all the files (.pst and .dat) into the outlook data folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\{Username}\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

the folder is hidden. let me know how it goes! =)

Posted daily
Copy the pst to hd, any location, do not overwrite any existing pst, remove
read only flag, then
In OL File>Open>Data File.......browse to location
Do NO import

Congratulations - you have just provided a recipe to hose the user's Outlook profile. You never overwrite exisitng information.

Exporting to and importing from a PST is never the way to transfer Outlook
data. Try the advice Milly and DL have given, but from your description
above, I'd say that your exported PST doesn't contain the data you thought
it did. After exporting to the PST did you test it to make sure it
contained what you wanted?

provide something constructive. it is obvious that everything should be
backed up before making any direct changes to the files.

stop spamming this discussion!! you are what the germans call a
"besserwisser". go play on the highway!

Your definition of constructive should be applied to the person you see staring back at you in the mirror in horror.

I have previously tried what Milli and DL suggested but same result in both
cases.

Only the folders appear in OLwithout the e-mails. I did not test the file
when I exported it ( did not know how?) but it was 650MB and so I assumed it
contained the e-mails as the size of the file was consistend with what I
expected.

Any thing else I can try?

Regards

Open again in Outlook with FiIle>Open>Outlook Data File to make sure it
contains what you think it should.

If opening it shows nothing, then it contains nothing. You are out of luck
if you no longer have access to the original PST.
