Outlook 2002 to Outlook 2007

No. We are not talking about the same message. Explain why you cannot run
the Inbox Repair Tool on your PST file. Outlook tells you where this file is
located in the properties for the file. Browse to it in the IRT. State what
error message you see when you are _closing_ Outlook.
You never try to open a PST file from Windows Explorer. You open PST files
in Outlook.

time to finish indexing your pst file".....and the message I see when
opening
Outlook, A data File did not close properly the last time it was
used.....we
are talking about the same message?

I still wonder what the message is that I can see opening in the middle of
the Outlook screen as I am closing the Outlook (or is this what you are
referring to?).

I did open Task manager....with Outlook closed and saw nothing running.

I used Help and Support and and found the Inbox Repair Tool. Instructions
given advise you how to navigate to the folder where Scanpst is located.
When I clicked on Scanpstand typed in Outlook.pst....the error message
"The
file C;|program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12\Outlook.pst does not
exists.
Type a valid file name. I then typed in the path I saw in Outlook where
Outlook saves the data file
...C;|Users\myname\AppData\local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst...and got
the
message the path specidied does not exist. If you recall,I mentioned that
following the path where Outlook showed the data file was saved...I was
able
to get to the Sub Folder OUTLOOK....but when I clicked on it instead of
seeing the Outlook.pst file....I got the message open with what program.
How
preplexing. So althopugh I found the Inbox repair tool, I was not able to
run it on the pst file. Suggestions?

Thanks for your reply. Here is where my inexperience with Outlook
2007
comes
into play. I believe I have the Folder List View you are referring
to
opened
and on the far left of my Outlook 2007 Window. This list has a top
header
"MAIL"...with folders under it.....ie Favorite Folders/All Mail
items/and
under Personal Folders I see all the Folders I imported. I don't
see
anything like Acct 1\Acct 2.... There is only 1 "Personal Folders"
header
shown is this view......

I opened TOOLS\OPTIONS\MAIL SETUP\DATA FILES...this folder shows 2
files:

Business Conact manager HOME-PCMSSmallBusness
Personal Folders Outlook.pst in
C:\Users\myname\AppaData\Local\Micosoft\Outlook

I tried to open the OUTLOOK Folder using Explorer to see the files
in
that
Folder...(in WindowsXP the folder would open and you would see the
files)
but
what I got was Open with what program....so I didn't go any further.
I
have
a lot to learn about Vista.

I only have 1 pst File?

:

That error message has a number of potential causes. You may be all
right.
The first thing to do is use Folder List view to see if you ended
up
with
duplicate PST files. That's the most common problem that arises
when
you
import a PST file. If you have duplicate PST files and cannot close
one
of
them, you'll need to create a new profile then migrate your data
file
to
the
new profile correctly. If you don't then we can
after
Outlook has had a chance to finish indexing your PST file.

A great teacher, but maybe a poor Student!

I got caught up in getting my new Vista PC with Outlook 2007 up
and
running.
Regarding your instructions to Transfer my Outlook 2002 .PST Data
File
to
Outlook 2007....what I can tell you is that I did NOT use the
Transfer
Wizard. However (and you knew this was coming); I broke you
second
'I
mean
it" and used Outlooks 2007 Import menu. After I created the mail
acct
in
2007....instead of using Copy\Paste\Open I used ....here it
comes....Outlooks
2007 Import Menu item. I used Import when I imported my
Favorites
into
IE7
from my old PC and it worked....great. The Import went well.
When
I
opened
Outlook 2007 everything was there...just as it had been when it
was
running
in Outlook 2002.

Outlook 2007 is running fine, except, I keep getting this message
as
I
open
it (not every time....but at least most of the time):

"A Data File did not close properly the last time it was used and
is
being
checked for problems. Peformance might be affected while this
check
is
in
progress".

Then after a minute or so get this message "Data File Check
Complete"

I don't think I saw it right after I imported my 2002 pst
file.....it
was
a
day later...but I can't be sure....seems to me if I saw it right
after
I
imported I certainly would remember....like immediate disgust for
doing
something wrong.

I thought after seeing "Data File Check Completed"....that it
meant
Outlook
checked the data file and made repairs as needed. But since the
message
keeps opening, I guess...I'm Wrong.

Suggestions?

I still have my 2002 pst file on my Thumb drive....should I just
follow
your
previous instructions and transfer the 2002 Data File...as you
instructed?
Or, given 2007 is running, and the 2002 file merged with the
original
2007
data File.....is there something I can do now....to correct
whatever
is
causing these messages to open?

Sorry for not being one of your better Students.....thanks

:

If you plan to access this same data file with both Outlook 2002
and
2007,
then by definition you will need to leave it in the old ANSI
format.
It
will
work just fine in Outlook 2007. You can always convert to the
newer
file
format later on if you find a compelling need to.
All you need to do is make a copy of your current Outlook data
file
in
Windows Explorer when Outlook is closed (do NOT export from
Outlook
to
"copy" this file). Then transfer to your new hard drive and
place
it
anywhere OTHER than Outlook's default location for data files.
As soon as you launch Outlook 2007 and configure a mail account,
it
will
create a new data file, which you will not want to use. At that
point
you
simply open your old data file in Outlook (File > Open > Outlook
Data
File...) and then set it to be your default data file in File >
Data
File
Management... Restart Outlook and close the new data file it
created,
and
you're all set.
Even more important is what you should NOT do:
1. Do not use Office's File and Settings Transfer Wizard. It
will
not
work
correctly when you skip an Office version like this. Instead,
you
must
recreate your mail accounts manually in your new Outlook
profile.
That's
the
only way to ensure your accounts will work. So make sure you
know
those
settings.
2. Do not use Vista's "Windows Easy Transfer." It does not work
with
Outlook
and will corrupt your Outlook profile.
3. Do not touch any menu command that says "export" or "import"
to
transfer
Outlook data. Ever. I mean it.

For more detail and for instructions on how to transfer things
like
rules

Thank you; I think you have more confidence in me knowing the
difference
than
I do. So perhaps I could respond this way. I want to
continue
to
use
my
current pst file in Outlook 2002 on my WindowsXP PC....seems
to
me
there
is
no sense changing its format (unless you feel differently). I
doubt
I
would
move these files between the 2 PC's...but I guess it possible.
But
for
now I
want to proceed the easiest way. I want to use my current
Outlook
2002
pst
file with Outlook 2007 on my New Vista PC. Seems to me I have
no
choice
but
to change the Format because that is the only way it will run
under
Outlook
2007, and, the new Format will allow the file to be larger.

I am still open to suggestions, one cannot fully make the
correct
decision
at my level of expertise.

The end result is, I want to continue to use the pst file in
my
old
PC
using
Outlook 2002, and copy and Transfer the 2002 pst File to my
new
Vista
Outlook
2007 PC. I want the pst file that will be transfered to
Outlook
2007
to
contain all the data as is now in Outlook 2002.

For my piece of Mind, please confirm, I am running only 1 pst
file........that was the 1st issue you explained we needed to confirm.

After I wrote I realized the OUTLOOK item I was looking at was the pst file
(Vista is not set to show extentions....I will try to change that). I ran
Scanpst....it showed errors, I ran Repair. Opened Outlook, no message.
Several openings later, message appeared again. I ran SCANPSt again. This
time it showed some message like, there were some inconsisstenties....you can
run repair but it is not necessary (or similar words). I ran it. In an
earlier message you mentioned this could be caused by ADD-INS. Several days
again when I went to open Outlook it would not open, I got a message about
the Bluetooth add-in having some sort of problem and was Disabled. Following
that Outlook opened. But dumb me, I was concerned that something originally
programed to run, was not. I explored and saw the Add-In "Send to Bluetooth"
in TOOLS\TRUST CENTER..... showed as Disabled. I Enabled it (ouch). After
running Scanpst last night, and, still seeing the error message on a few
Outlook openings, I decided to try to reverse what I had done and Disable
"SEND to Bluetooth" Add-in. I finally figured out the right click on the
Outlook Icon, Run as Administrator (even thought I am the
Administrator)......and I was able to make Send to Bluetooth Inactive. All
seemed to run fine. This morning when I opened Outlook I got the message
again. I ran Scanpst, it showed NO Errors. I have opened Outlook about 3
times so far and that error message has not appeared. So why it showed up on
the 1st opening today is concern, but all other start ups it has not
appeared. Is there a difference between Inactive and Disabled....and should
I make Send to Bluetooth Add-In DISABLED? (how would I do that?). Maybe the
root of the problem has at least been pin pointed. I will keep you Posted.

I am still seeing a small Window open as Outlook is closing. I wish I knew
what it is saying but the program is closing and there is no way to read
it.....its all closing too fast. Any idea what this message is? It just
seems silly to me that a programmer would design into Outlook whatever this
message but not leave it visible long enough to read it. Anyway you might be
able to find out what this message is?

I have sounds on when receiving mail....when I open Outlook its set to
immediately get new messages. When these messages come in NO Sound is heard.
But messages that come in during its check for messages, or, if I click
Send\receive...the sound is heard. Is there something I need to set, or, is
this the design?

As far as I can tell you only have one PST. If you still wonder, you can
recheck in File > Data File Management...

The rest of the information you have now introduced makes for endless
possibilities for your getting the error message(s). If I were you I'd start
over with a new Outlook profile. You've pretty well mangled this one.

You are using the Mail view, not the Folder List view.
See the icons at the bottom of the Navigation Pane? Click the one
that
says
"Folder List." That's the only way we'll know how many PST files
you
have
in
your profile.

Thanks for your reply. Here is where my inexperience with Outlook
2007
comes
into play. I believe I have the Folder List View you are
referring
to
opened
and on the far left of my Outlook 2007 Window. This list has a
top
header
"MAIL"...with folders under it.....ie Favorite Folders/All Mail
items/and
under Personal Folders I see all the Folders I imported. I don't
see
anything like Acct 1\Acct 2.... There is only 1 "Personal
Folders"
header
shown is this view......

I opened TOOLS\OPTIONS\MAIL SETUP\DATA FILES...this folder shows
2
files:

Business Conact manager HOME-PCMSSmallBusness
Personal Folders Outlook.pst in
C:\Users\myname\AppaData\Local\Micosoft\Outlook

I tried to open the OUTLOOK Folder using Explorer to see the
files
in
that
Folder...(in WindowsXP the folder would open and you would see
the
files)
but
what I got was Open with what program....so I didn't go any
further.
I
have
a lot to learn about Vista.

I only have 1 pst File?

:

That error message has a number of potential causes. You may be
all
right.
The first thing to do is use Folder List view to see if you
ended
up
with
duplicate PST files. That's the most common problem that arises
when
you
import a PST file. If you have duplicate PST files and cannot
close
one
of
them, you'll need to create a new profile then migrate your data
file
to
the
new profile correctly. If you don't then we can
after
Outlook has had a chance to finish indexing your PST file.

A great teacher, but maybe a poor Student!

I got caught up in getting my new Vista PC with Outlook 2007
up
and
running.
Regarding your instructions to Transfer my Outlook 2002 .PST
Data
File
to
Outlook 2007....what I can tell you is that I did NOT use the
Transfer
Wizard. However (and you knew this was coming); I broke you
second
'I
mean
it" and used Outlooks 2007 Import menu. After I created the
mail
acct
in
2007....instead of using Copy\Paste\Open I used ....here it
comes....Outlooks
2007 Import Menu item. I used Import when I imported my
Favorites
into
IE7
from my old PC and it worked....great. The Import went well.
When
I
opened
Outlook 2007 everything was there...just as it had been when
it
was
running
in Outlook 2002.

Outlook 2007 is running fine, except, I keep getting this
message
as
I
open
it (not every time....but at least most of the time):

"A Data File did not close properly the last time it was used
and
is
being
checked for problems. Peformance might be affected while this
check
is
in
progress".

Then after a minute or so get this message "Data File Check
Complete"

I don't think I saw it right after I imported my 2002 pst
file.....it
was
a
day later...but I can't be sure....seems to me if I saw it
right
after
I
imported I certainly would remember....like immediate disgust
for
doing
something wrong.

I thought after seeing "Data File Check Completed"....that it
meant
Outlook
checked the data file and made repairs as needed. But since
the
message
keeps opening, I guess...I'm Wrong.

Suggestions?

I still have my 2002 pst file on my Thumb drive....should I
just
follow
your
previous instructions and transfer the 2002 Data File...as you
instructed?
Or, given 2007 is running, and the 2002 file merged with the
original
2007
data File.....is there something I can do now....to correct
whatever
is
causing these messages to open?

Sorry for not being one of your better Students.....thanks

:

If you plan to access this same data file with both Outlook
2002
and
2007,
then by definition you will need to leave it in the old ANSI
format.
It
will
work just fine in Outlook 2007. You can always convert to the
newer
file
format later on if you find a compelling need to.
All you need to do is make a copy of your current Outlook
data
file
in
Windows Explorer when Outlook is closed (do NOT export from
Outlook
to
"copy" this file). Then transfer to your new hard drive and
place
it
anywhere OTHER than Outlook's default location for data
files.
As soon as you launch Outlook 2007 and configure a mail
account,
it
will
create a new data file, which you will not want to use. At
that
point
you
simply open your old data file in Outlook (File > Open >
Outlook
Data
File...) and then set it to be your default data file in File

Data
File
Management... Restart Outlook and close the new data file it
created,
and
you're all set.

Thanks.... for your help and being patient with me.... The 6th time I
opened Outlook today...that error message came up. I ran Scanpst....it
showed NO ERRORS. This would seem to me to say my pst file is fine and
something else is causing the problem....wouldn't you agree?

Once again, if I could read the Window message that is opening as Outlook is
closing it might be helpful.....but all closes before its possible to read
the message.

So if I created a New pst file, this problem may not be fixed because I
would still be running the same Outlook install.

In you 11/16 entry you asked whether I wanted to upgrade to the new

After I opened Outlook 2007 for the 1st time and created my e-mail acct,
Outlook connected and retrieved new mail. Following this I then Imported my

This error message is quite common, lots of users have indicated they are

I am still seeing a small Window open as Outlook is closing. I wish I
knew
what it is saying but the program is closing and there is no way to
read
it.....its all closing too fast. Any idea what this message is? It
just
seems silly to me that a programmer would design into Outlook whatever
this
message but not leave it visible long enough to read it. Anyway you
might
be
able to find out what this message is?

I have sounds on when receiving mail....when I open Outlook its set to
immediately get new messages. When these messages come in NO Sound is
heard.
But messages that come in during its check for messages, or, if I click
Send\receive...the sound is heard. Is there something I need to set,
or,
is
this the design?

:

No. We are not talking about the same message. Explain why you cannot
run
the Inbox Repair Tool on your PST file. Outlook tells you where this
file
is
located in the properties for the file. Browse to it in the IRT. State
what
error message you see when you are _closing_ Outlook.
You never try to open a PST file from Windows Explorer. You open PST
files
in Outlook.

With what I provided to you, I am NOT running duplicate pst
files...correct?
The 2002 imported pst file mereged with the 2007 pst File?

The error message you wrote in your last response was "Outlook has
not
had
time to finish indexing your pst file".....and the message I see
when
opening
Outlook, A data File did not close properly the last time it was
used.....we
are talking about the same message?

I still wonder what the message is that I can see opening in the
middle
of
the Outlook screen as I am closing the Outlook (or is this what you
are
referring to?).

I did open Task manager....with Outlook closed and saw nothing
running.

I used Help and Support and and found the Inbox Repair Tool.
Instructions
given advise you how to navigate to the folder where Scanpst is
located.
When I clicked on Scanpstand typed in Outlook.pst....the error
message
"The
file C;|program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12\Outlook.pst does
not
exists.
Type a valid file name. I then typed in the path I saw in Outlook
where
Outlook saves the data file
...C;|Users\myname\AppData\local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst...and
got
the
message the path specidied does not exist. If you recall,I
mentioned
that
following the path where Outlook showed the data file was saved...I
was
able
to get to the Sub Folder OUTLOOK....but when I clicked on it instead
of
seeing the Outlook.pst file....I got the message open with what
program.
How
preplexing. So althopugh I found the Inbox repair tool, I was not
able
to
run it on the pst file. Suggestions?

:

I already mentioned the most common reason for the error message:
Outlook
has not had time to finish indexing your PST file. Another common
reason
is
that Outlook is not exiting completely or correctly because of some
add-in.
The next time you close Outlook, make sure the process is not still
running
in Task Manger.
Also, try repairing your file yourself using the Inbox Repair Tool.

Personal Folders and under Personal Folders I see the list of
Folders
to
include all the folders I had created in Outlook 2002. At hte
bottom
of
the
list is Business Contact manager with its associated Sub Folders.
I
do
not
see any other Folders. My impression is that the Import of 2002
merged
with
Outlook 2007 pst file because my Inbox shows, in proper date
order,
my
OUTLOOK 2002 INBOX messages and the OUTLOOK Outlook 2007 that I
recieved
before I Imported 2002.

This confirms I have just 1 pst file? Yours of 11/29 reads if we
confirm
only 1 pst then we can troubleshoot the other "possible cause for
this
error
message-- or it may go away on its own".

Besides the message that I see on Opening Outlook sometimes about
Checking
the data File because it did not properly closes... When I close
Outlook
I
can see a message opening in the center of the Outlook Window but
its
impossible to read because Outlook is closing.....and this
message
closes
as
well. be nice since a message is opening that time was allowed to
read
the
message. I do wonder what it is saying.

The "problem" could well be that you imported the old pst file instead of
just opening it. You may well have both a corrupted pst file AND a corrupted
Mail profile.

try creating a new mail profile, (Control panel-Mail-Profiles) and OPENING
the old pst file within that. Don't import.

Importing your PST file certainly created errors in your file. But it did
not change the file format, and you have already confirmed that it did not
create a ghost PST file. And you have repaired the errors in your PST file.
The rest of the information tells me you also corrupted your profile. Create
a new one.

For my piece of Mind, please confirm, I am running only 1 pst

This

can
run repair but it is not necessary (or similar words). I ran it. In

Several

again when I went to open Outlook it would not open, I got a message
about
the Bluetooth add-in having some sort of problem and was Disabled.
Following
that Outlook opened. But dumb me, I was concerned that something
originally
programed to run, was not. I explored and saw the Add-In "Send to
Bluetooth"
in TOOLS\TRUST CENTER..... showed as Disabled. I Enabled it (ouch).
After
running Scanpst last night, and, still seeing the error message on a

Outlook openings, I decided to try to reverse what I had done and
Disable
"SEND to Bluetooth" Add-in. I finally figured out the right click
on
the

If what you've posted is correct, your PST file should be the new UNICODE
format. To check, look at its properties. What does it say in Advanced >
Format?

When you create a new profile, it will create a new, empty PST file by
default. You have no need for a new file. So you open your current PST file,
set it as the default, restart Outlook, then close the new empty that was
created.

time it showed some message like, there were some
inconsisstenties....you
can
run repair but it is not necessary (or similar words). I ran it.
In
an
earlier message you mentioned this could be caused by ADD-INS.
Several
days
again when I went to open Outlook it would not open, I got a
message
about
the Bluetooth add-in having some sort of problem and was
Disabled.
Following
that Outlook opened. But dumb me, I was concerned that something
originally
programed to run, was not. I explored and saw the Add-In "Send
to
Bluetooth"
in TOOLS\TRUST CENTER..... showed as Disabled. I Enabled it
(ouch).
After
running Scanpst last night, and, still seeing the error message
on a
few
Outlook openings, I decided to try to reverse what I had done and
Disable
"SEND to Bluetooth" Add-in. I finally figured out the right
click
on
the
Outlook Icon, Run as Administrator (even thought I am the
Administrator)......and I was able to make Send to Bluetooth
Inactive.
All
seemed to run fine. This morning when I opened Outlook I got the
message
again. I ran Scanpst, it showed NO Errors. I have opened
Outlook
about 3
times so far and that error message has not appeared. So why it
showed
up
on
the 1st opening today is concern, but all other start ups it has
not
appeared. Is there a difference between Inactive and
Disabled....and
should
I make Send to Bluetooth Add-In DISABLED? (how would I do that?).
Maybe
the
root of the problem has at least been pin pointed. I will keep
you
Posted.

I am still seeing a small Window open as Outlook is closing. I
wish
I
knew
what it is saying but the program is closing and there is no way
to
read
it.....its all closing too fast. Any idea what this message is?
It
just
seems silly to me that a programmer would design into Outlook
whatever
this
message but not leave it visible long enough to read it. Anyway
you
might
be
able to find out what this message is?

I have sounds on when receiving mail....when I open Outlook its
set
to
immediately get new messages. When these messages come in NO
Sound
is
heard.
But messages that come in during its check for messages, or, if I
click
Send\receive...the sound is heard. Is there something I need to
set,
or,
is
this the design?

:

No. We are not talking about the same message. Explain why you
cannot
run
the Inbox Repair Tool on your PST file. Outlook tells you where
this
file
is
located in the properties for the file. Browse to it in the IRT.
State
what
error message you see when you are _closing_ Outlook.
You never try to open a PST file from Windows Explorer. You open
PST
files
in Outlook.

With what I provided to you, I am NOT running duplicate pst
files...correct?
The 2002 imported pst file mereged with the 2007 pst File?

The error message you wrote in your last response was "Outlook
has
not
had
time to finish indexing your pst file".....and the message I
see
when
opening
Outlook, A data File did not close properly the last time it
was
used.....we
are talking about the same message?

I still wonder what the message is that I can see opening in
the
middle
of
the Outlook screen as I am closing the Outlook (or is this
what
you
are
referring to?).

I did open Task manager....with Outlook closed and saw nothing
running.

I used Help and Support and and found the Inbox Repair Tool.
Instructions
given advise you how to navigate to the folder where Scanpst
is
located.
When I clicked on Scanpstand typed in Outlook.pst....the error
message
"The
file C;|program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12\Outlook.pst
does
not
exists.
Type a valid file name. I then typed in the path I saw in
Outlook
where
Outlook saves the data file
...C;|Users\myname\AppData\local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst...and
got
the
message the path specidied does not exist. If you recall,I
mentioned
that
following the path where Outlook showed the data file was
saved...I
was
able
to get to the Sub Folder OUTLOOK....but when I clicked on it
instead
of
seeing the Outlook.pst file....I got the message open with
what
program.
How
preplexing. So althopugh I found the Inbox repair tool, I was
not
able
to
run it on the pst file. Suggestions?

:

I already mentioned the most common reason for the error
message:
Outlook
has not had time to finish indexing your PST file. Another
common
reason
is
that Outlook is not exiting completely or correctly because
of
some
add-in.
The next time you close Outlook, make sure the process is not
still
running
in Task Manger.
Also, try repairing your file yourself using the Inbox Repair
Tool.

I clicked on the Folder Icon...At the top of the far left

the

FOLDER LIST. Below that I see ALL FOLDERS......ALL OUTLOOK

I
do

Outlook 2007 pst file because my Inbox shows, in proper
