migrate outlook 2002 to outlook 2007

This seems like a simple enough queston, but I can't find a simple answer. I
have an old pc running XP Pro and outlook 2002. Getting a new machine with
Vista and Outlook 2007.

Can I simply copy the outlook.pst and the other .psts I have to the proper
location on the new machine? Maybe put another way, will Outlook 2007 open a
..pst file created in Outlook 2002, without going through some
migration/conversion?

I have done this with other machines, but they were both running Outlook 2002.

Thanks

Essentially, but there is no "proper" location for a PST. You can place on in
any folder to which you have access and Outlook won't care. Use the Mail
applet in Control Panel to add them to your mail profile. Be sure to not
overwrite any existing PST in whatever folder you decide to put them. Do not
use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate Outlook data.

I forgot to mention that while you can continue to use your old PSTs in
Outlook 2007, you should consider converting them to Unicode PSTs so as to
avoid any size issues and to make use of additional features of Outlook. See

So basically I create a new user on the Vista machine, point it to whatever
directory I want and then put the old files in that location (taking care to
not overwrite any files that may already be there). Is that correct?

Maybe one additional question....are there any settings in Vista that I
should watch out for? The settings on the existing account look pretty
straight-forward.

I will definitely convert them to Unicode even though my files are no where
close to the size limit.

Thank you very much.

This seems out of order to me. Create the Vista user and allow Vista to
create the user profile whet it likes. Then copy the PSTs to, say,
....\Documents\Outlook Files for that user.

For Vista, your typical user account should not be an Administrator account.
Instead, when you need to perform administrative functions, use the "Run as
Administrator" feature. That will prevent the accidental activation of
unwanted programs. This is actually good practice for XP as well, or to use
an Administrator account only for installing software you purchased or where
you know its provenance.

I used the wrong term. Rather than "user" I should have said email account.
So set up the email account with the file location and then put the OL 2002
files in that location.

Again, there's nothing "magic" about the location where Outlook creates PSTs
by default. Moreover, you you create a PST there, make it a part of a mail
profile, then overwrite it later, you will corrupt the mail profile.

Brian,

I'm sorry but your last message was not clear to me. What are the steps I
should follow to migrate an Outlook 2002 mail pst from a XP Pro machine to
Outlook 2007 on a Vista machine?

Thanks,

Doug

See if this helps:

Just don't overwrite any existing PSTs. The article mentions Outlook 2002,
but it applies equally well to other versions of Outlook. Once you have the
Outlook 2002 PST connected to the mail profile on the Vista PC, convert it to
a Unicode PST. http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ansi-to-unicode.asp
