Outlook 2000 stops responding trying to download first message

This problem started 12 hours ago. I have Office 2000 with all updates, XP
Pro with all SPs and updates, McAfee Viruscan and Google Desktop.

OL2000 starts normally, and opens the "receive" dialogue box after
connecting to my Broadband email server. It says "downloading message 1 of
6" and then stops responding.

I've read the Knowledge Base re this problem, and it seems there could be a
large number of causes.

I'd be grateful if someone could pinpoint the most likely cause(s) so I can
troubleshoot this problem more efficiently. Thanks!

Use your ISP's web mail and see if there is one particularly large message
it is trying to download. If yes, delete it from there and try again.

Thanks Milly. Tried that, but there are no large messages waiting. As an
interim measure, I have to keep logging into webmail to manage incoming mail
and reply where required.

Thanks Peter. Also tried that but to no avail.
This, and Milly's suggestion of an oversized email trying to download, are
the only two things I've tried.

using your webmail try deleting or moving the first message in your
webmail to a different webmail folder. then see if OL will download
the remaining messages.
