Outlook 2000 after XP Home Upgrade requires reinstall

Andrew

I have just upgraded my Windows 98 running Office 2000
machine to XP Home edition. After upgrading to XP Outlook
2000 requires a reinstall from the Office 200 CD. I
bought my machine from a private party with all software
already loaded and he did not give me the office 2000
cd's.

My question is can I install Outlook 2003 without loosing
all my contacts and mail folders or do I have to first
obtain a copy of the Outlook 2000 cd to repair Outlook
before attempting the Upgrade?

Thanks
Andrew Nixon

You will not lose any data, but I sure wouldn't attempt an upgrade
installation of Office 2003 when your Office 2000 installation is already
corrupt. Upgrade installations rarely work under normal circumstances
without your having to create a new Outlook profile to clean up all the
corrupt settings left over from the earlier version.

Back up your data. Remove Office 2000 completely and install Office 2003
clean. The file you need to back up is your Personal Folders file (*.pst)
It's where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup:

If you install Outlook 2003 and still keep Office 2000, you will lose some
Office automation integration.

However, having said that, you can upgrade and keep all of your Outlook
data - but to be on the safe side, it is always a good idea to backup your
files before installing any new software. The .pst file is where your data
lives.

In the future, FYI, when a computer is sold with software preinstalled, the
seller is obligated to provide you with the installation CDs per the LIcense
Agreement.
