Outlining

I am using outline view to outline my document. I would like to add symbols for the appropriate heading levels (e.g., "I", "A", "1" etc.)in order to prepare for printing. When I use the formatting menu and select bullets and numbering and then go to the outline numbered tab and customize my settings accordingly the result is that only the first heading level seems to be formatted (e.g., I, II, III, etc.) The other levels simply retain the outlining symbots so that I am not getting "A" "B" "1" etc. How can I get the entire document to outline all of the heading levels. Thank you for your cooperation. Also, I am getting different spacing after each of the roman numerals even though they are all spaced equally in the outline view before I try to apply the formatting.
