Outbox to Sent Before message sent

When using Send/Receive, progress meter is very fast and message is moved
from Outbox to Sent Items immediately, before sending is done. This makes it
appear that message is sent and the line can be disconnected. I have
mistakenly closed Outlook even though all messages are not yet sent. Is
there any option or way to move messages from Outbox to Sent Items AFTER they
are sent as I think was the case with Outlook 5? (I am on a 56k dialup.)
Many thanks for any ideas.

Outlook should not move the message from the Outbox to your Sent Items
folder until it receives confirmation from your mail server that the
message has been sent completely.

Yes, I agree that it shouldn't do that. But, it is in fact doing so. That's
my problem. Are you suggesting that it might be the mail server and not
Outlook?

It could be that you have a program, like a mail antivirus scanner, that is
acting as a proxy between Outlook and the real mail server and telling
Outlook the messages have been sent when, in fact, they haven't. Are you
scanning outgoing mail with a program?

Thank you Brian. Yes, I have Norton 2005. I turned off scanning outgoing
mail but that was no help. So I turned off scanning incoming mail and that
didn't help either. Then I disabled Norton completely and the problem went
away. However, having a security package that is totally disabled doesn't
seem like a very good idea. Any ideas?
