Out of range.

Have Win XP Home Ed. I went to adjust the screen resolution (via control
panel- display -settings)
I choose the highest setting and the screen went black and displayed the
error message "Out of range".I cannot get anything 'cept the black screen.
The mouse doesn't work, tried re-booting, no difference. I have absolutely
no way to get see the Windows screen and select the Start button, to regain
the control panel, etc.
Any suggestions....???

Well, I believe if you read your own message properly, you'll find the
answer there.
Reboot in Safe-mode & drop it down to the next lower resolution & see if it
works in normal mode - if not, go lower until it does.
Otherwise, buy a higher res. monitor.

Turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon
as the first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep
tapping rapidly until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears and choose
Safe Mode from the menu.

The only option you will have for the video settings in Safe Mode is
to click on Apply so as to apply the Safe Mode settings for use on a
normal startup. Do this and then when you restart in normal mode you
can configure the display settings to other values. Just ensure that
you choose settings that are compatible with your specific monitor.

Sorry, I should have included more explicit instructions, I suppose.
I'm surmising now that the original poster is semi-computer illiterate, (no
offence meant), so they should be helped step by step through this - unless
it's a possible monitor failure - e.g., Q.1 - what brand & model monitor is
being used?

Boot into safe mode:

You need to hit F8 during boot, just after the BIOS info switches to black
screen. Or...

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and check off /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok,
reboot.

Once done, either go to Start/Run: Msconfig/Boot.ini/Basevideo or change
your display properties to Screen refresh rate: 60 Hertz.

The only option you will have for the video settings in Safe Mode is

Taking Enable VGA from the menu should get you direct into Normal mode,
but using those base drivers

Enable VGA is only added to the Boot Menu when Service Pack 2 is
installed I believe.

That's your monitor telling you that it's not receiving a usable
signal from the computer.

Boot into VGA Mode or Safe Mode and then set the display
(resolution, refresh rate, and/or number of colors) to something that
your display can handle. Consult its manual to determine acceptable
settings. Reboot one more time, into normal mode.
