OT: WP docs saving with incorrect extension.

Clutching at straws here.
For 20 odd years I have been using MSWorks which saves with *.wks extension.

Suddenly they save with a *.doc extension, which loads the file in Word
which of course will not open.

Anyone know if I can fix this in the registry at all?

Thanks.

Rod,
Usually, some programs like 'M$ Works Word Processor' take their
default 'save as file type' from the last few files saved.

i.e. If the last few files saved were of type '.doc' then it will
start automatically saving the next files as the same '.doc' type files.

It doesn't matter if you don't remember doing that. The important thing
is that the 'default' could have been changed.

To change it back again, try opening up the Works Word Processor and
creating a new blank document and then saving it as a '.wks' type file
from the 'drop-down list' in the 'Save as...' box. Do this about three
or four times, then you should find that the file is being saved as
'.wks' automatically once again.

Alternatively, if the above does not happen to work, you might try
sifting through the 'options' , 'settings' or 'preferences' in the 'M$
Works Word Processor' program, for an option to 'Save files as type'.

I wouldn't know what this 'setting' or 'preferences' is actually called,
since I have deleted M$ Works from off my system as I grade M$ Office as
an infinitely superior program.

This is where listening to the advice posted by "Lem" to go to a 'M$
Works' news group might be more useful to you.

I see you tried that already, without much success. Sorry. If this
happened recently, try using System Restore to go back to a time when
things worked properly.

This condition seems to have something to do with the Works file
converter utility. See this thread (which, unfortunately, doesn't have
the complete wps_fix.reg file):

Cheers Lem,
racking the grey matter, as far as I can recall,
the only two programs I have loaded in the past 12 months
is a converter so I can open word docs with an *.docx extension
and Adobe pdf reader. ( what a load of rubbish that was)

Thanks for at least trying to address my problem.
As you may have read in the Works NG
I ran the works fix program and had a "failure 8"

Rod.

G'day Tim,
I have tried most of what you suggest, but I'll go back
and try your opening a wp doc, a few times (interesting suggestion)

of course MS office is superior, but there will always be call
for the "kindergarten" style "suite" that the old banger MSWorks 4.5a is.
I even run a 5 million record database through the 32,000 flat file database
of Works, but that's another story.
"Lite" is often the best avenue for short sharp jobs.

I have tried saving the WP template to *.wks, but it refuses, and defaults
to *.doc
that is why I thought the registry could be the avenue for fix.
Rod.

I did,
It did
Thanks Alan,
I'll go mosey around in the registry.
Failing that, it is an easy program to load (MSWorks 4.5a)
so I'll remove and reload the program.
Onya.

One point, I did suggest *saving* a blank file tree or four times, not
'opening' one.

You could also try looking through the registry yourself. Go to the
'Works' key, probably under both "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Works" and
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Works" for any references to .doc

But then, settings in the program's 'preferences' (or Settings or
Options, whatever) usually works by setting keys and values in he
registry anyway.

Rod,
In case you too have problems seeing the page that displays the
reg-fix, here it is again :

--------------------- copy between lines ---------------------

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text
Converters\Import\MSWorksWin4]
"Extensions"="WPS"
"Name"="Works 4.0 for Windows"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft
Shared\\textconv\\works432.cnv"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text
Converters\Import\MSWorksWin4]
"Extensions"="WPS"
"Name"="Works 4.0 for Windows"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft
Shared\\textconv\\works432.CNV"

--------------------- copy between lines ---------------------

Copy and paste all the stuff between the lines into a text file using
notepad.

Save or re-name this file with a .reg extension (use a dos-box if
necessary to be sure it is .reg).

Line-wrap may have messed up the first line of each section that spells
out the key.

The line that starts with [ should end with ]

There should be three = lines under each [key] name

There should be a space between the words :
Shared Tools
Common Files
Microsoft Shared

Hope this works for you...

It [line-wrap] also messed up the last line of each section.

The "Path"=" line should have a valid path to your .wps file converter
file in the folder :

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\textconv\works432.CNV"

Thanks very much Tim,
I shall address your suggestions.

You have been helpful, so I feel a bit sorry that we shall beat you rotten
in the upcoming Cricket Tests.

That's okay, I don't follow cricket, or most sports, really
("Sacrilege!" I hear you say).

I hadn't realized that you were using Outlook Express, I have attached
that reg-fix file to this post.

Let us know if it works...

No luck Tim,
I downloaded your fix to HDD
clicked on the reg fix
it did its job, but did not fix the problem.

I have saved a dozen times, , I tried
giving it an *.wps extension but immediately defaults eg Test.wps.doc

If I can find the MSWork program I bought 15 years ago
I'll re install.

Thanks for trying.
rod

The wks extension is for a MS Works spreadsheet.

If you are not getting the option to save your file with the wks
extension I'm guessing you are probably using the MS Works word processor.

Hello Bob,
Yes I am using the Word processor.

If I give (change the *.doc) the file an extension of either *.wks or *.wps
it will open
but with the automatic extension it is given as *.doc, it will not.

If I name the file "test.wps", it will save as "test.wps.doc"

It was my fault for accidentally citing the .wks extension (when I
should have wrote ".wps"). It's been quite a long time since the
'Works' suite was on my system.
