OT: What replaces usenet?

M

Marty

A p2p kind of usenet comes to mind ;)

Lots of work to make something like that though... and then the question
is... will people start using it or not ;)

Maybe a transition would be best ;)

So far usenet seems far from dead ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.

Why don't you **** off twat. It is exactly people like you who have
contributed to the declining usefulness of usenet.

. . .

Before Usenet there were numerous networks of privately run dial-up Bulletin
Board Systems (BBSes). One of the biggest ones, FIDO, even migrated and still
exists on Usenet.
No there weren't.

In the beginning, there were mailing lists on Arpanet.

Then in 1979, Usenet started up, using telephone lines to distribute
messages, each site batching up the new messages originated there and
passing them on to the next site.

Yes, BBSs started in 1978, but they weren't networked for some years.
A standalone BBS isn't really different from a web forum, though
actually less since the pool of people that called any specific
BBS was usually quite small (not a surprise since they never
had many phone lines, and that limited how many could participate).

Fidonet started in 1984, or 1983 at the earliest.

The Well was in place in 1985, which is when Usenet become quite
visible to a more general population. I think it had already been
covered in Byte by then.

OK, are there any GOOD web based forums? I would define good as, pages load
FAST, interface is intuitive (not requiring a "help" button), posts are
totally UNmoderated and uncensored, anyone can post without registering
first, plenty of participation and most posts are on topic. Do these exist?

No, because those meeting your criteria are overwhelmed by spam.

I don't know who posted the original message, sorry.
But can someone fill me in on what has happened?
I've been off line a great deal the past few months.
The pickings have gotten slimmer and slimmer.
I've dropped from 200+ Gigs downloaded in May down to 5 Gigs
downloaded this month.
However in the interim, it seems like Binary posts in Dutch and German
have taken over.
While this may be fine for the Porn downloaders, it is not the same
when I try to watch a TV Show in polish. It makes it a bitch to get
the jokes. Though some TV shows are so bad that it couldn't be worse
if it was in Yiddish.

If anyone could help me fill in the blanks I'd be grateful.

Some of the major ISPs have stopped "peering" usenet completely (all groups,
including text only groups). The stated reason was to combat the
distribution of kiddie porn over usenet. I think the actual reason was to
stifle free speech, as if you are targetting porn, there is no need to axe
the text groups.

Bottom line, traffic in all groups has been affected. Seems some of my
favorite text groups (I don't subscribe to binary groups at all) has
decreased about 80%. -Dave

OK, now that the anti-free-speech nazis have crippled usenet in the name of
protecting the children, what will replace usenet?

do not know what you are talking about here.
There has to be a text-only replacement for usenet. What is it? If it
doesn't exist, can we create one? -Dave

The first step would be for those carrying usenet to simply drop all
cross posted messages. Would cut down the spamming, or at least make the
spammers do more work.

Why doesn't someone make a way to connect all of the posts
together so everyone can see everything on a topic by going to
just one place, with perhaps redundant sources that are connected
together so I only have to see one copy of each message? HEY!
Someone already did this and called it USENET.)

Exactly.

Do you actually see any crossposted spam?

Maybe we travel in difference circles, but I see very little here.
