OT...Well?

I built a machine, some time ago, to run XP. The basics follow.

AMD 1700+
PC M830LR m-board
512 DDR
G-Force Ti200
460 wt power supply

I have started using my machine as a stereo and found the PC to be too loud,
sounds like a 747 on the taxi-way, I changed CPU fans from a 5600 rpm unit
to a variable 3000-5600 rpm unit and disabled a case fan.

I don't recall the temperatures from before the changes. The current
temperatures are:

Sys: 35°C/95°F
CPU: 54°C/129°F

I can hear my music now but;

My question is; Are these temperatures too high? I have checked the web and
none of the information seemed realistic to me, for instance, I found a max.
temperature for the CPU to be around 90°C. This seems like a melt-down
temperature to me.

Even though the query is a bit off-topic, I would appreciate any input
anyone cares to offer.

TIA, JAX

What kind of sh*tty speakers can't drown out computer fan noise?

Kurt,

The speakers are not a problem, they are Altec Lancing. The problem is, I
don't like loud music and would rather hear the music than the fans.

Now, do you have anything constructive to say or, is this the best you can
come up with?

LMFAO!!!!!

The CPU temp is a bit on the high side but not enough to be dangerous. I
have a Thermaltake Silent Boost on my CPU very quiet (21dec.) and good
temps. My CPU is around 38 - 40 at idle and 45 or so at full tilt.

The PSU's a bit overkill! I'm quite happily running a P4 3.2GHz HT, 1GB RAM,
2 HDs, 2 opticals on a 360W.

Anyway, are those temperatures idle or under load? If the latter, then
they're probably OK - if the former, then you probaby need a more efficient
CPU fan (depending on what the load is, and how long the, CPU is under load,
the temperature could easily rise between 20 and 30°C, which would be a max
of 85°), 90° is the melting point for an AthlonXP CPU.

If you're feeling brave (because this could result in the death of the CPU
or other sensitive components) you could download the evaluation version of
SiSoft's SANDRA and run the burn in overnight (but, like I said, this puts
components under extreme stress and, if any are weak, they could fail). I
would also download Motherboard Monitor from www.livewiredev.com and use it
to measure the ambient temperature of the CPU (the case temperature is
largely irrelevant). This link http://tinyurl.com/ogqx gives CPU
temperatures for all AthlonXP CPUs and more information can be located at
www.3degs.com.

Also, when was the last time you got out the compressed air and cleaned your
case out?

Thanks Testy.

The CPU fan I have is Techie Toyz. It is rated at 27 dBA @ 3000 rpm. I can
live with that, as long as the CPU isn't in danger, I'll look around for
Thermaltake though.

Thanks Epona.

The temp. is pretty well constant with the things I normally do. About the
biggest load on the machine is when I open an AutoCAD drawing while playing
music. I am not a gamer so there is little real demand on the CPU.

You're right, the PSU is a bit of overkill but, it is not as noisy as the
CPU fan that I had. In fact, if I stall the CPU fan, I can barely hear the
PSU. (I only did that for a split second!) I also have two HD's and two
optical drives

I will check the links you offered, thanks for them, especially the one to
Livewire. I have been looking for a MB monitor.

Cheers, JAX

Kurt,

The speakers are not a problem, they are Altec Lancing.

And you don't think that's a problem? You really aren't using you computer
as a stereo, you are just abusing your ears.
The problem
is, I don't like loud music and would rather hear the music than the
fans.

Ok, so what kind of aircraft engines were you using to cool your computer?
Now, do you have anything constructive to say

Not in this OT thread. As far as I'm concerned, if you were playing under
the sames rules that MS's forces on me through their selective censorship of
my posts, this post should have been pulled from the server.
or, is this the best
you can come up with?

I got a laugh out of Sel'mack, and that's all I was going for, humour.

At what??? I didn't see anything funny in the brats post!

OOPS, it had a cuss word in it, that must have been it!

Your "humor" must be something very personal to you alone. No other poster
seems to recognize it.

....I'm going for a non 747 type system box innards in a couple of weeks but,
I wanna keep my Lian-Li case that cost £128 quid when I bought it, and the
very next week dropped down to £80 or was it £60 !!. I've been searching
the web on and off looking at "silent" parts. I'm getting an Antec psu,
(Zalman psu reviews weren't too good), fans that have owl feathers instead
of plastic blades, hard disks that can be located in a different room, and
an
"AeroCool" http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/home.php I think.

Best of luck with your new setup. It seems that every time I buy something,
I see the same thing, or better, at half the price the next day.

He's not a brat (though he acts like one) - I don't know how old you are but
I venture to suggest he could very well be old enough to be your father...

He seems to be one of three things,

A. a decrepit old man who is very lonely
B. a spoiled young brat who needs parental control or
C. ricky, definition unknown

Ah but, your 360w psu could still be a cheap nasty one! ...flame...flame
:) I was astonished that so many psu's have no overload cut-out and and
can explode and/or catch fire when they're stressed to full load, and on
some of them, nowhere near full load. You can't always go by the label. For
an interesting read:-

Hey Richard,

My PSU is 460 watts. I don't recall the brand but, it is not a $19.95 US
one. At 460 watts, I don't think it ever gets stressed out. I never even
push the CPU with the things I normally do with the PC.

Calling someone a Brat doesn't necessarily age them,
however it does refer to their emotional development,
His sense of humor is childish, leanings towards saying
things that are taken as shocking and crude are childish
and immature, this is a forum used for technical help
humor not withstanding, stepping outside the lines purely
for the sake of saying something foul, crude is not humor,
but disruptive and selfish. he needs to grow up.
Now that I've said that, I do admit he appears to have
some technical smarts, now if his emotional attitude could
match, it make for a nicer forum. But then the world is
not made up of all the same people, that's gods way.
you get good and bad.. I'm sure at times I've gotten the
same snipes from others at this forum, I do have my
childish moments..
