Well... It was free :-) Saturday I downloaded the Vista Beta2 and
installed it last night. So far (24 hrs.) I like it, and I'm not so sure
it's as intuitive as XP, but time will tell. It's like going from Windows 95
to XP - quite a jump.

As I understand it, anyone who installs the free trial form of Vista
must either purchase and install the final version or do a complete
reinstall of their previous version of Windows at the end of the trial
period (which I believe ends in June of 2007).

It looks cool though. Thanks for the pic.

In either case it's OK with me. It's been running without a glitch, although
it's definitely limited in some minor areas. Some things are disabled, such
as the ability to download newsgroups and load XP compatible freeware and
other apps. My graphics card won't support all of the 'glass' effects
either.

Jump? its more that a blundering stumble!

Vista has extremely bad design (Im talking about the GUI).. and even though
its still in beta, they seem to not
want to change the things they should... rather they want to get the bugs
out.

Bugs out are not enough to save them from what will follow after the release
of vista.

And NO, I am not resistant to change, I welcome change, as long as its for
the better.

Hi PanHandler!

Can you tell me please the Windows Version of Vista? XP for example is
NT 5.1.2600 (looks to me as a side blow to ATARI VCS and then CX 2600,
the newer VCS) ...

Hi John Jay!

Why so pessimistic :)?

Windows 95 is Chicago and XP is eperience, what's also without end in
sight ;-). Is not Chicago with that ol' Trams? 1880 or so...

Thanks.

Kind Regards,

Sorry I did not understand what you are saying here...

you asked what version Vista is, and I said its version 6. Why am I
pessimistic?

I have to put my two cents in. I have been running Vista for three days
now and I think that it is XP dressed up.

The bad:

Dual boot doesn't work
Drivers for my very popular sound card are not available
Does not allow third party programs that compete against MS (ie.
zonealarm, AVG antivirus)
Windows Explorer is no longer a user friendly program.
Windows Media Player is a bloated, do everything for everyone program.
Microsoft Mail would not import mail, contacts, address book.......
Had to install Thunderbird.
All programs need to be reinstalled. Upgrade does not work.
Althought the new Firewall monitors incoming and outgoing, I don't
believe it will monitor or block MS products.
Control Panel is a mess. Very misleading naming convention. ie. To
activate my second monitor, instead of going to "Display Settings", I
go to "Personalization".

Now the advantages:

Vista networking works. XP was buggy.
Forward and Back paging in the Control Panel.
Installation was easy.

Vista is XP with fancy icons and animations. Contrary to previous
comments, Vista is not a jump. Although I have only 3 days experience,
I can not see any justification for spending the $100.00 or so to
upgrade. This is similar to the Windows ME upgrade scam.

Give it a little time.

Of course not. They are not automagically written said:

Huh? I'm running Symantec Antivirus Enterprise Edition on it. It issues a
warning because it is not specially written for the system, but the next
version of SAV will be.
Windows Explorer is no longer a user friendly program.

Well, that is in the eye of the beholder.
Windows Media Player is a bloated, do everything for everyone program.

That is a different product you are talking about.
Microsoft Mail would not import mail, contacts, address book.......

Jesus. It's a BETA. Look at the internet team blog. The import settings are
comming.
Had to install Thunderbird.

You *can* bock them. Look at the exception list.
Control Panel is a mess. Very misleading naming convention. ie. To

Again, this is a personal view.
Vista is XP with fancy icons and animations.

Nope. internally this beat has pretty different things. The whole Avalon
API, the new native api functions, more secure device driver handling...
There are lot of changes but you don't see them in the surface.

Hi - it's 6.0.5394 (Longhorn Beta) AIDA 32 SysInfo says it's 'OS Name' is
"WindowsT Vista Ultimate Server (Terminal Server Edition)"

Vista gets more symphatic for me :). As I said, I was already satisfied
with NT4, but XP released me from the U.S. defense ministry awards
(read in 'Inside Windows 2000', Mark Russinovich and David Solomon, MS
Press). Better said, with NT5, M$ got more public and international.

Who cares about that awards. The U.S. defnse Military does use NT4 so
and so.

Windows Explorer is no longer a user friendly program.
Well, that is in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I never liked Windows Explorer that is included with XP. I
always preferred 2 pane file managers. I spent a great deal of time
trying just about every freeware 2 pane file manager. I settled on
Xplorer2 Lite and edited the registry of it so it launches Super Finder
when I click on the Find button. See my review at:

You do realize that there's a navigation panel in Windows Explorer
too, don't you?

OK, I don't consider the navigation pane to be an actual pane. It is
there for ... well navigation. I prefer file managers that have 2
working panes. Xplorer 2 Lite has 2 working panes and a third
navigation pane. But, you would know that if you looked at the screen
shot included with my review at the link included in my previous
posting.

O.k. but it is still confusing what you mean. Standard Windows, as I
prefer, is also the Explorer... explorer.exe

I think you mean the integrated directory and file manager. Called
confusingly 'Windows-explorer'.

Although it is poor what MS achieved with Windows. It is still unstable
with move and copy paste. A 30GB mega-move wasn't succesfully finished.
In 2006, no proper working Windows???

Who cares.... for my instances it works most of the time.
