a bit off topic but i'm not sure where to post, other than i'm running
xp pro...

have a eaton 5110 ups on my antec 450w powe rsupply.

a few days ago i got an alert (ubs from eaton) than my battery failed.

ok. sh-t happens. bought a new battery, replaced, but now there's no
communication via usb and the power led on the pc stays on after
shut-down. (doesn't when plugged directly to the mains)

i know, junk the 5110, which i will do, but i ask the above with a view
to (if there's no problem with the above) using it as a 'clean' power
supply to my lcd tv, dvd player / hd recorder.

You've tried turning the UPS off and back on, and
a power-down reboot, right?

What is it going to 'clean'? Review and post numeric specs (ie THD)
that define cleaning.

It maintains voltage during minor voltage changes. But to do that
requires a working batttery. Is you battery non-functional? Then
what does that UPS 'clean'?

First define which paramter you want 'cleaned'. Of maybe twenty
different 'dirties', which one does that UPS 'clean'? Your post
implies you bought their subjective propaganda 'hook, line, and
sinker'.

Meanwhile, is the UPS defective? Or just USB communiction?

In most cases if a UPS takes a power hit it needs to be replaced, it's
done its job and that's all you can ask.

If it was just a voltage issue, not a power hit, then the battery will
be used to provide a proper output, until the battery is dead/low.

If you want "Clean" power than you need a UPS that provides output all
the time, not just that kicks in above/below certain voltages.

If you had ANYTHING connected to power that wasn't connected to the UPS
then you could have damaged the UPS. All devices that get power need to
be protected by the UPS.
