~OT~ Recommendations for Dial up account?

K

kline

I'm looking for a cheap yet reliable dial up service that has a toll free
number for access when on the road. I tried Bell South, but they want
$15/month for the account and $5/hr for the toll free line.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Kline

Sounds like you need to find a cellphone that can connect as
your modem or digital if you look hard enough, you need a
nationwide plan with unlimited access. Suggest you do your
research, look at Cingular, Verison, T-Mobile, all the
providers to see what they offer. Also some cable or DSL
providers have reasonably priced plans for dial-up when on
the road.
Most major ISPs have local dial up numbers, just get a list
of numbers and dial in. Your username and password are not
tied to the local access number. Look on the websites for
local number lists.
You could get a laptop for travel with a 802.11 WiFi and
find hotspots while on the road at McDonalds, StarBucks,
airports and other places.

Bell South should have given you a hint. Somewhere in the south of the USA
would be my guess.

Why would one assume that south refered to Sth USA and not South Chicago or south america, or south africa or even New South Wales?

I've been using Earthlink for years. $21.95/mo. gets you 8 mailboxes
w/10MB space and 8 webpages w/10MB space and local access numbers all
over the country. If you decide to go with Eathlink let me know cuz I
get a free month if you follow my recommendation :)

Thanks for responding, Steve. $21.95 is somewhat steep, since this would be
a secondary account for me (I have a cable connection in my home and
business). Also, my interest is due mostly to the fact that I will be out of
town for a few weeks, but need to maintain email contact. I will be in a
remote area in Colorado where any provider is unlikely to have a local
number, thus the need for an 800 number. If they could provide an 800 number
and if I wasn't bound to a time commitment contract, I could consider
Earthlink.

Thanks again,

Kline
