I thought it was going to do that?

There is a KB article for finding Morro definitions, but I don't have the
number handy. When it was posted, I did a bit compare of the definitions
found via that article, and those at the security portal for Forefront, and
they were identical....

Just installed on a xp home box. Just hope it's as thorough as its
top free competitors (avast, avira), one of which I had to uninstall
in the process.

I want to install MSE so that it will run in On Demand mode, Not Real
time/Background.
I do not want to remove my current Realtime AV, which I know to be reliable.
I would prefer it that it does NOT remove or turn off Windows Defenders real
time protection.

Purpose: To test it as a backup checker [on demand] without compromising my
current Real Time protection situation. I know MSE realtime protection can
be turned off [i've seen the pics] but can I set it up that way to test?

Ideas ? Replies ?

For those not going to the MSE forums, this is apparently a known
issue and will be fixed in a future version. You do not need to
disable Defender, but MSE doesn't always seem to turn it off like it
is supposed to.

Thanks - I'll test, I think--it sure is easier to just send people to the
portal. It may well be that the listing won't appear there until the
product is final.

You can install it and turn off real-time protection in Tools, Options. The
install does not make it mandatory to turn off your existing protection, but
it will fail to install if other Microsoft antivirus applications are
currently installed, in my experience.

I'm not sure where this would leave Windows Defender. I suspect that if you
install MSE, and turn off real-time protection, Windows Defender will be
able to be enabled again, but I haven't tested this, and I'm not sure when
I'd be able to.

Seems worth trying--let us know if you do?

Sorry Bill, I am not brave enough to be the first to try.
If it disables WD on install I would need to know for sure I can re-enable
it after turning of MSE's RTP. I am not will to lose my WD protection to
test MSE's on demand prowess. Anybody got a spare computer that's willing to
try ?

Tim,

"need to know for sure I can re-enable"

If you go into Control Panel on my Win7 machine and WD is there, if you
click it will ask you if you want to enable it. Don't know if that is what
you are after but it does work.

OK. I'm running Windows 7. I can never find Windows Defender on it so I
just typed Windows Defender into search, clicked on the resulting link,
enabled it, updated defs within the app, and am presently running
simultaneous quickscans with Windows Defender and MSE.

MSE is quite a bit faster in terms of number of items per second, too.
