[OT] Moving XP from C: to D:

M

Mart

I've currently got XP on drive C
but it's the slowest drive on the
system now that I've got a second
hard disk in two partitions.

I want to move XP from C to
D, hopefully without having
to reinstall all the software I've got.

My idea is to use the Files & Settings
Transfer Wizard to move all my settings
to drive D and then do a fresh install
of XP on drive D. Now, this is the
part I'm most interested in - would
it be possible to use the registry editor
to export the registry as a file then
import it again once XP has been
transferred, to maintain the integrity
of the files currently on drives C and D?

I'm grateful for any help you can give.

after you move your XP, any software that was installed, will for the most part will not function. as the shortcuts and registry
bindings to c: will be incorrrect.

Export the registry and then remap the swapped drive to c:
simple :)

It's possible, but unless you have infinite patience and time, chances are
the registry is chocko full of references to the C:, and that will be very
difficult to change.
What may work is to do a full system transfer from the old to the new, then
make the new drive C. Whatever path you take, it will be fiddly, and I
myself would always opt for a fresh install.

I would use Ghost and simply clone C: to D: Then you switch the jumpers
slave to master, and master to slave, and reboot. It's that easy. I have
done it many times when upgrading hard drives in my 3 pc's.

Agree - that's the easiest way.

Other option is to do a clean install on D:, then swap jumpers etc and then
use file and transfer wizard to migrate the data.
