[OT - maybe] Need opinions, please ..... are these freeware?

..... I have been visiting a lot of binary usenet addresses to download huge
collections of 1950's pop songs (my hey-day). Can these be considered
freeware? It's not like using Kazaa, etc to download modern-day pop songs
that are being sold in music stores. I've got a collection of over waaaaay
over
1,000 pops from the decade of 1950-59, and just wanted to know if I'm
morally covered. <G>

Highly unlikely

You're not. Your downloads are almost certain to be copyrighted.

Thanks for the prompt response. Just curious why there are no such binary
outlets for any pop songs from 1969 on to the present?! I thought perhaps
that anything 50 or more years old, was open season. I realize that some
copyrights have only a limited lifetime. Of course, specific recorded
collections of such tunes .. such as "The Best of 1950's, blah blah" might
be copyrighted as a collection. But, where did THEY get the right to
collect them? Even the Library of Congress has such old collections, and
permits individuals to bring their recorders to get a single copy, or you
can let
them do it for you for a fee.

There are :)

In fact, some albums become available on those groups before they hit
the shops .....

AFAIK, *everything* is in the binary groups ....
