OT:keyboard problem

PC (Dell E150 XP MCE) is about 1 year old and now every morning when I first
boot up the keyboard is unresponsive. I unplug from the USB port on the PC,
replug cable and the PC reports "new hardware found" and the keyboard works.
Original keyboard that came with the PC. Is this a software problem? I had
Windows search for new drivers with no luck. Device Manager does not show a
problem. Time for a new keyboard? Thanks, Steve T

OT = Off Topic? Is that because you believe it to be a hardware problem and
likely not OS specific?
Try posting to microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware instead then.
If you think there might be a general OS software issue also, maybe just
cross-post it there.

lot of people get annoyed at cross-posting. Oh well, either way; I caught

A lot of people get annoyed at "top posting". I haven't seen anyone get
annoyed at cross-posting. They will get annoyed at multi-posting.
top posting = putting your response in the top of a message with the quoted
stuff below
cross-posting = asking the same question in multiple forums at the same time
(you can select multiple newsgroups in a single message)
multi-posting = posting separate messages in different forums asking the
same question

If it is the operating system then it's not OT. If it is a hardware problem
you might want to cross-post it to be safe..
Anyway, I'd guess if the keyboard does work after reinstalling that it is
the OS.
I take it the "new hardware" problem is a new issue and it used to work
fine?
Did you try the other USB ports? You might have a bad port..

Do you have a restore point set up for Windows? You might try that..
Try creating a restore point after install then restoring to it.
Might need a "Windows repair"
Might want to test the keyboard on another PC if you have access to one.
Last resort, might want to reinstall the OS.
If all else fails, try replacing the keyboard.

It worked fine.

Did you try the other USB ports? You might have a bad port..

I have tried other ports with the same result the next day. I have also just
re-plugged into
the same port with the same result:"new hardware...." and the keyboard
works.

Do you have a restore point set up for Windows? You might try that..

I have that and I could restore even further back with ERNDT.

Try creating a restore point after install then restoring to it.

OK, and I could use ERNDT for that tomorrow also.

Last resort, might want to reinstall the OS.
If all else fails, try replacing the keyboard.

Put in a Windows CD and reboot (make sure BIOS has higher priority for CD
drive than hard drive).
It should load a screen that says it wants to install Windows.
That should give you a message about Windows already found.
Somewhere in there should be an option to repair current installation.
