OT: HDD Configuration

Just a quickie.

Dell Dimension 8300. Uses a CS (Cable Select) IDE cable.

Original drive installed as Master and jumper set to CS

I've added 2nd PATA HDD as Slave and set jumper to Slave

Is this the correct way to to do it? Or should I of set the jumper to CS.
Does it really make a difference?

Noticed manual advises to set device as CS. Any performance issues? Drive
works fine.

Just curious.

Cheers

Rob

I would set it to CS. No performance difference. Either it reads and
writes or it doesn't.

Cheers Colin. Drive works as it should. If no performance issue then I may
or may not open the box and change.

If there's only one disk in the system, CS works pretty much all the time.
If there are multiple hard disks, one drive will be disk 0, the second will
be disk1, etc... Typically, most folk install Windows on the first disk in
the system (disk0). If you've got several to choose from, you'd want to
choose the FASTEST drive typically for Windows, and your slower drives for
less frequently used files.

If drives are jumpered CS, then position on the cable determines first or
second position. If you want to be certain of a master/slave, if you're like
me, you'll specifically set one drive as master and the other as
slave--leaving no guesswork to it.

If you don't have multiple disks, don't worry about it. If you add another
disk later, you'll need to know to put the 2nd disk further down the cable so
that your first CS jumpered drive STAYS as the first disk, otherwise, if you
insert the new drive with the expectation that your original drive will still
be your boot/system drive, you might be in for a surprise if both drives are
CS and you inadvertantly make the new drive become the first drive--then
you'd have to open the case AGAIN, play with the cables.
