slow boot

Since I removed my slave HDD it take 28 minutes to boot. There no error
messages and after boot it runs normally. So far took these actions:
1. set jumper to CS and master
2 reinstalled an additional drive trying both master-slave jumpers and CS:
there is no change.
Initially master was the current 300GB and slave 200 GB. In the above test I
replace the slave with an old 4GB.
What else can I do to remedy this problem?

Have you looked at the Warning and Error Reports in the System and
Application logs in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hello, Gerry, first chance I've had to address this problem. The recurring
errors in the "System" entry were:
1. The System Restore Service terminated with the following error: The
Device is not ready.
2. The Sytem Restore Initiation has failed.
3. Event Type: Error
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1002
Date: 8/20/2007
User: N/A
Computer: Viola (my wife's computer)
Description:
The IP address lease 192.168.1.100 for Network Card with network address
00115B38D9F7 has been denied by DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent
a DHCPNACK message).
I went to DOS, sc query, and got this message:
"The Specified Service does not exist as an installed service"
(I had to type this, as "paste" didn't work here, but I appreciate your
detailed instructions)

I don't know what "service" they're talking about, can you help?

If System Restore was monitoring the drive you removed then the act of
removing the drive would render restore points created before removal
unsable. You should only have System Restore monitoring the system
volume.

Are you connecting to the internet through a router. If yes remove the
power supply cable from the router, wait 5 minutes and then plug it back
into the router.

minutes (to be sure), connected it back and rebooted -- no change.

I don't know what they're talking about, hope you do. Are we homing in on
the solution?

sure), connected it and rebooted -- no change.

Hello Gerry, downloaded and installed UPHCLEAN then rebboted: no changee in
boot time, but more explicit errors. No "Application" errors or warnings.
"System" targets "System Restore":
"The System Restore service terminated with the following error: The device
is not ready"

and:
"The System Restore initialization failed"

When I goto the support site suggested it tells me there is no information
available regarding this error.


Previously you said that System Reastore should be used to monitor system
volume only, how do I do thet? When I right click on "My Computer" and go to
Properties and System Restore tab an error pops up saying something like
:"running DLL as an app ......... must close.... etc". When I open System
Restore in "Services" it gives me "Error 21, the device is not ready"
What device?

I wonder, if reinstalling XP will fix the problem?

Hello Gerry, Yes, I think you've done enough, and I thank you. I've
reinstalled XP which cut the boot time to 26 min (from 28)! I have some clues
which make me think it's looking for another drive: the single HDD is
labeled" Disk 2_Vol1 (C)", and when I go to "Search" among the choices I get
"Disk 2_Vol1 (C) " and " Local Hard Drive (C); each yields a different order
of the same files found. I seem to recall that there is a way to tell "SetUp"
that there is only one HDD: what do you think?
