OT: Flaky News-Servers

M

MickeyMouse

I have noticed for some tome now, that not all posts show up on all
news-servers. Sometimes I make a post here, and post does not show up.
Then later I post it again, and this time it shows up. Then I use another
news-server to read the group, and on that server both posts are there.
Also, I notice some different posts on some servers for this group then what
show up on my regular news-server. This seems to be true for all groups and
news-servers. Have noticed this happening for many years now.

So, what is my point? Just feeling like I want to rant a little about the
inconsistency of UseNet. Too bad that the system is not more standardized.
It is disgusting to find posts that I have totally missed, just because they
did not show up on my news-server. Worst of all, there have been
reply-posts that I did not respond to because I did not see them, and I'm
sure the poster thinks I was being rude. UseNet is very flaky, so I hope
people understand that, and just take it all with a grain of salt.

But, dang-it!, there may have been many good freeware proggies over the
years that I totally missed! :(

Oh well, what ya gonna do...

ISP's actually use their own "copy" of the UseNet database, as such, it
takes longer for posts to show up on some, than it does on others (on the
larger ISP's, it can take anywhere upto 3 days for posts to show up).

Not a problem if you use a newsreader that gets posts from multiple
news servers, such as Dialog, and/or use a news proxy server like
Hamster.

Sometimes I have had the same newsgroup downloaded from maybe
six different news servers. Don't appear to miss much that way.

Regards, John.
