OT? FireFox Never Opens Window

XP Pro SP2.

When I launch FireFox, firefox.exe just sits there in TaskMan |
Processes taking 25% CPU and about 20 megs of memory, but it
never becomes visible.

I've uninstalled, re-booted, re-installed a couple of times.

Happens with version 2 and version 3.

Does NOT happen on my two other home PCs and does NOT happen on
my work PC. From that, I'd guess it's a "Me" issue and not a
FireFox issue.

I posted this in the Mozilla forum and it was suggested that I
set up a "Test" profile via FireFox.exe -p and see what happens.

Did it 3 times, and no change.

Anybody been here?

Suggestions?

Completely uninstall FF (including registry settings) using Revo
Uninstaller and try again.

You need to format your hard drive and reinstall windows.

Open taskmanager, processes and terminate any instance of firefox that
might be running. Then restart firefox. This has worked for me for
certain other programs, including IE.

Get a copy of Process Monitor from Sysinternals. Set the filter
for the assumed process "firefox.exe". Once the filter is set
up, so you don't have to look at as much output, attempt to start
Firefox, and see what the trace captures. Once you're satisfied that
Firefox is stuck, you can stop the trace, sit back, and analyze it.

I have seen that before - when you close FF completely and then try to
launch it again before the process finally exits. This seems to take
several seconds sometimes, and you will get a message that it is
already running...

Perhaps if FF bombs or exits unnaturally, it could hang and leave
things behind that it normally wouldn't. Mozilla has some interesting
discussion on reasons that might happen and solutions here:

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+is+already+running+but+is+not+responding

I usually just sigh and wait or kill firefox.exe in Task Manager if I
just can't wait, but so far, it always goes away by itself eventually.

If it NEVER goes away and there is not a good reason for it, then that
sound like a different issue.

Having adapted to a teenager pounding on my PCs several hours
each day, I always have a fairly-recent image of a clean build on
hand.

Accordingly, I wimped out and just re-imaged the offending PC.

Maybe next time, I'll have the perseverence to dig into it, but
for now, it's history.
