(I posted this to another group, but have received no responses. I'm hoping
someone here has an answer.)

I use WinXP, SP2. I am a book reviewer and editor, and I have a need to
send faxes regularly. The fax capability in WinXP has worked just fine, up
until yesterday.

For some reason beyond my understanding, all of my personal cover pages have
disappeared! I've done everything to try to find them -- searching for
..cov, for the name of the cover page, etc., but nothing.

I know I haven't erased them -- I use them all the time. Does anyone have
any idea what's happened? Naturally, I looked in the recycle bin and
they're not there, either.

Thanks for any help you can give.

double check your fax settings and make sure that your cover page does
exist.

Short of a trojan, virus or a hard drive going bad I would try looking one
folder higher or lower than where they usually were.

It's easy to accidentally drag an entire folder of stuff inside another
folder with an accidental flick of a mouse button. If they were moved into
one of Microsoft's "hidden" folders then a routine search may not show them.

Try searching again for a couple of them again but use the "More Advanced
Options" section and make sure you have the check mark active in "Search
system folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" as well as "Search
subfolders".

If all else fails you may have to resort to using a restore point or backup
file to get them back.

Good Luck

Alas, tried all that.

It seems the problem occurred at some point where I'd overwritten the
backup, and I have it set to delete files in the backup that are no longer
on the hard drive.

Thanks anyway for the help.

I'm not sure what you mean, but the common cover pages are still there, the
ones I've created are all gone. I have three that I've created myself for
special purposes.

I've looked within the Fax console, and directly through File Manager, and
they're just gone.

but do faxes send even with or without the default / standard cover
pages ?

have you run chkdsk (or some other hd maint. util. such as defrag)
lately ? did your computer abnormally shutdown or reboot ?
