OT: CD-ROMs not recognised

Mike

This is actually (just) on topic, as I think it arises out of my use of AVG
7. But I don't know where else to ask about this.

For the past few days, whenever I change the CD in my CD-R or CD-RW drive,
my PC can't read the new CD (audio or data) and tells me:

"The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure
that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not
corrupted."

I have to re-boot to read the CD.

I remember that this began last month after I'd installed AVG 7 Free. I
reverted to AVG 6 and the problem went away. I've since upgraded to the pay
version of AVG 7 (that's off-topic, of course) and for a few weeks I didn't
have the CD problem. Now it's come back. And even disabling AVG 7 doesn't
sort it out.

Anyone know why, and what I can do to fix it? All helpful suggestions will
be gratefully received.

Thanks, Fred and JMatt for your responses. I'm not using a Roxio CD drive,
so that hasn't helped; and I tried the various sites JMatt listed, without
finding reference to the exact problem I've been encountering.

AVG's techies are now on it -- I hope that they can spot the cause!

My first step would be to contact AVG.

Thanks for your note. I did that the first time round. They first told me
to change a UDF setting in the registry, and then (when that didn't change
anything) they suggested that I update Ahead InCD (which I used for packet
writing) to V4. That created all sorts of other problems; Grisoft then said
that InCD didn't like AVG (or words to that effect). I uninstalled InCD,
and the problem went away -- until the last couple of days. Anyway, I have
contacted them again. Let's see what happens...

InCD didn't like AVG (or words to that effect). I uninstalled InCD

Every system that I have seen that has InCD on it eventually has CD
problems. That go way for a couple of days after deinstall. Then come back.
It is a pariah and I hate it and dumper Nero b/c of it.

Just for the record, the AVG techies gave me the following solution, which
has worked:
open System registry (Start > Run > regedit ), find following key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BsUDF]
and change the "Start" value from 00000002 to 00000004. Close the register and restart your PC.
This should solve your problem.

Why is AVG screwing around with CD settings in the first place? I didn't
tell it to scan anything except hard drives and I got my keys reset.

What do you use in place of InCD / Nero? I got them with my CD-RW drive.

Your guess is as good as mine. Mind you, I find M$ WinXP a total mystery at
times -- settings get changed left, right and centre...

I refuse to run XP and I refuse to work on any machine that has it
installed. W2K SP$ is solid through and through and I have zero reasons to
move off that platform.

What is it exactly that you want to do?

I want to use a CD-RW as a floppy, for backups. Given the conflict between
InCD and AVG, I can't/won't use InCD until I can be sure they've stopped
fighting. Unless I can find an alternative...

Thanks -- but I'm really looking for a UDF (packet writing)
application that works like InCD but better (and freer, if possible).

Prassi's abCD from Sony. Small, uninstalls cleanly.
