OT: Cataloging photos

F

fade

Good afternoon to you all
First of all, I would like to express some gratitude
in advance, for reading my post. Thanks!

I'm a newbie on digital photo and I was hoping
you guys could give me a hand.
I just bought a digital camera a few months ago and
I have around 1500+ photos on disk.
I would like to catalog (and afterwards arquive to DVD) these photos
in a way that I can search for a particular photo.
This search would combine attributes such as a specific place, friend,
date and category (eg. animals, sunsets, flowers, portraits, misc...),
perhaps more than one at the same time.

In short, I would like to make searches like:
All photos taken on X place between D1 and D2 dates
All photos taken to the X animal on Y place between D1 and D2 dates
All photos taken with X friend that have sunsets on them
etc...

Is there a freeware tool that I may use to accomplish this and
how is it done?

By the way, what image editor (freeware) do you use or like the most?
Gimp? Others? Why?

Thanks again for reading and/or replying

I am in a similar situation to yourself, having just bought a digital
camera.

For organizing. cropping, colour correction, red eye reduction and
e-mailing, I like Picasa www.picasa.com . It has an interesting timeline
feature. I haven't got into serious editing yet but any suggestions welcome!

Btw there seemed to be some doubt as to whether it is freeware, as it used
to be paid for, It is now freeware since they were taken over by Google.

There are many programs available in this category. Here are a few
links:

Myalbum (http://www.myalbumpro.com) is a good image catalog program.
It can also produce slideshows with transitions.

Pixvue (http://www.pixvue.com/).

CatPhoto (aka WinPhoto) (http://cat-photo.sourceforge.net/).

Here is a list of image cataloging programs, though not limited to
freeware.
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Graphics/Image_Cataloguing/

You can search ACF for old posts on this topic at
http://www.google.com/advanced_group_search.

By the way, maintaining a list of keywords (search terms) for your
photos takes time and effort. Be sure that it is worth the effort for
you. :)

For organizing. cropping, colour correction, red eye reduction and
e-mailing, I like Picasa www.picasa.com . It has an interesting timeline
feature.

It has a good interface, very simple (perhaps too much); it's good if
you have many photo all over your harddisk(s) and it's difficult to make
bad thing.
You can add keywords for search by double-clicking on album (directory)
or pressing a button beside selected photo.
Nice the tray space below, the web exporting and the incremental search.

No editing (except red eye remover): rotating & contrast aren't applied
to the photos, but Picasa remember your preferences for each photo.
I haven't got into serious editing yet but any suggestions welcome!

Photofiltre http://www.photofiltre.com/ is good freeware editor (not
very easy).

OT: in Italy many magazines give for gratis Photo Impact 6 full version
(an old version of a shareware graphic editor that I like very much for
easy retouching)
Btw there seemed to be some doubt as to whether it is freeware, as it used
to be paid for, It is now freeware since they were taken over by Google.

There's a good forum on Picasa' site for advices about 2.0 verion!

Is there a freeware tool that I may use to accomplish this and

two good possibilities:

FotoAlbum:
http://www.fototime.com/pages/ftWhatsDifferent
http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/install/fasetup.exe (4560 KB)

MyAlbum:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/myalbum/MyAlbum.html
how is it done?

I've used FotoAlbum more - like it a lot and recommend you try it.

FotoAlbum recognizes camera dates automatically. You can create photo
groups (albums) that show a particular person, event, etc. etc.

There are several ways to search (filter) images - by caption, date,
keywords etc. Each filter (word) you add to the search reduces the
number of images you see. The kinds of searches you wish to make are
very easy.

FotoAlbum can make photo CDs with the same search options - nice for
sending to family and friends (nothing to installed on their computers -
it's all self-contained).

Adding captions and keywords is time consuming. Files can be grouped to
add information to all files in the group at one time which helps quite
a bit. I suggest you play with the program and learn what it can do
*before* you start choosing and adding keywords. This is the voice of
experience talking. . . ;)

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Irfanview yet! It has all the organizing
and cataloging features you could want. Plus, It even handles CRW files!
This has a very strong following among the users on DPReview.com. I've
tried it, and I liked it pretty well, but since I already had a
viewer/organizer that met my needs, I saw no reason to change.

Thanks. A great program, but such a shame it doesn't give red-eye reduction
or cropping. I see it is possible to add in tools, but that is probably a
bit too complicated for my present simple requirements :-(

Pretty easy actually - just right click to get to your favorite editor.
From the help file:

<q>
The tools page of preferences is used to define all external
applications that you use to edit or enhance pictures. Typically these
are programs used to crop, remove red-eye or otherwise perform picture
manipulations that FotoAlbum does not support. By defining these tools,
you can quickly edit pictures by right-clicking on a picture and use the
"Tools->xxx" sub-menu. You can also define Hot-Keys to allow quick
access to these programs.

FotoAlbum detects any changes made to pictures and automatically
regenerates thumbnails

You can't go past Pikasa now freeware thanks to Google who bought the
company. Was $29.95.
