original files deleted after new XP install

I have just installed a copy of XP, full installation not
upgrade. Now I have lost a number of data files although
the folders are still there. Can anyone help? Have I lost
the files for good or are they still on my disk
somewhere? There still seems to be a lot of data on the
hard drive

It may be that you have hidden files of that type, go to the folder options
and make sure you are viewing the file extension type,
