Order of Applications Displayed

Is there a way to change the order of the applications at the bottom
of the XP screen? They appear in the order in which they are opened,
but I sometimes prefer to rearrange them. TIA.

Wait for Windows 7.

Do you mean on the Task Bar (which, by the way, doesn't *have to* be
on the bottom of the screen)?

Windows has no ability to do this, but there are third-party utilities
you can download to do it. Do an internet search for them.

You mean the icons in the system tray?

Actually, they display in the order they get to the point of displaying
the icon in the System Tray. The app may not actually be completely
loaded at that point, but most are. Some apps load in "chunks" so it's
difficult to do much with them. AV for instance, loads part of itself
immediately, then moves aside for other things to load, then gets to the
icon, and in my case is one of the last apps to completely load. May
apps load in "chunks" that way.

One option is to go into System management and set some for Delayed
Start. You can sometimes use that to get one to load last, but it's not
much for overall order. Besides, windows will sometimes re-order them
on its own now and then too, so if it works then quits, look to see if
it was removed from delayed start.

Personally I'm not aware of any 3rd party stuff that can successfully
give you much control, but ymmv.
