operation failed to somplete lsass.exe

When I tried to boot my P4-2.8Ghz/1GB/XP Pro SP2 (with all available updates
from Microsoft Update) machine last night, it got almost to the desktop then
displayed the error message "The operation failed to complete...lsass.exe"
and powered off.
I tried to boot to safe mode, same error & powered off.
Last known good configuration did the same.
Eventually I got it to boot by selecting 'disable automatic restart after
system failure' from the boot menu.

I thought...how in the HE** did I get sasser...but scans by AVG 7,
Trend-Micro Housecall, MS Antispyware, Adaware & Spybot Search & Destroy all
were negative.
The machine seems to run normally once booted.
Has anyone run into this?

When I got home from work, I installed the new Microsoft Updates and
rebooted.
It gave the 'operation failed to complete' error about 10 times with power
off after each.
It doesn't matter what I chose from the boot menu, safe mode, last known
good, disable restart, etc.
I ran SFC and it replaced a few files, but on reboot, same thing, it took 8
tries before it booted.
Every other time, lsass.exe error, the operation failed to complete and
power off.
Any suggestions?
