lsass.exe application error

Hi,

I'm having a problem with an XP pro machine. When booting,
windows comes up to the point at whitch it tries to load
lsass.exe. I get nothing else on the desktop except the
message that says 'Lsass.exe- application error. The
application failed to initialize properly (0Xc0000006).
Click OK to terminate the program.'

When i click on OK, the error message goes away and I am
left at the blank desktop (no icons or taskbar). The
computer will stay like this until I shut it off.

I've tried starting in safe mode, but the same thing
happens. I've also tried last known good configuration and
the same thing happens.

I don't think that extracting a new copy of lsass.exe will
work as it seems like something has gotten screwed up in
the logon process.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Boot from the XP disk and when prompted to do so choose
install OS. Then when the selection screen comes up choose
to repair the OS. If you have any screens that come up
requesting a password just ignore them and hit enter on
your keyboard. Keep smiling.

Try starting in Safe Mode and to the Administrator account. That should
appear as an icon; if not Hit CTL-ALT-DEL twice to get the logon dialog,
then enter the explicit name
Administrator
and leave password blank unless you remember setting a password for it.

If that does not get in, then a repair reinstall is indicated: Set the
BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do
not take 'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take
'Repair Installation'. This will retain your existing software
installations and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again,
especially SP1;
It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

I had this same problem, its an HP right? you will have to use the System
Restore Utility disk that should have come with your system, if not you can
obtain one thru HP. go to their website there is a link there someplace to
order restore disks.
Hope it helps.
