Operating System not found

We just purchased a new Compaq Presario S5000V for my
daughter to take to college. It has Windows XP Pro as an
operating system. She took it to school and had to have
the computer department setup the network for the school.
She is now experiencing "Operating System not Found"
errors if she leaves the system logged up overnight. When
she reboots the sysem it runs slow. What could be causing
this issue? Is it a hardware issue? A Operating system
error? Or can it be related to the network setup?

I'll add to Mr. Frisch's perfect advice: return the machine immediately
and insist on a new one. This is a hardware issue and will never get
better.
