openoffice sheet to excel: grows considerably

When I save an openoffive spreadsheet of say, 27kB as an XP office
Excel sheet, it grows to more tha 2 MB.
Why and what to do about it ?

I haven't done this but would imagine that deleting the un-needed
rows/columns would help.
