Openning attachements

My MS Word attachments in Outlook open in a different format from what they
were saved in. Why does this happen?
Example: I created a Brochure with 2 Columns in MS Word and saved it. I
emailed it to a friend. When he opened it the as a regular document, ruining
the presentation. I opened the attachment myself and notice the same
distorted result. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Outlook doesn't usually muck with the format of attachments (it deals with
them as a series of bytes not as specific file types, it doesn't really care
what the bytes are). If you ZIP the file then send it does it arrive
normally?
