Often results in just the window border showing up, and nothing inside the
window; just absolutely blank and transparent. Have to log off and back on,
or restart, to fix it. Now I have to do this several times a day.

I have the latest certified Vista drivers from NVidia, 2G RAM, any ideas
what's causing this? It's getting very frustrating. Any and all help will be
appreciated.

Anything in your event logs? Start/Orb, type event, click Event Viewer...

Event Viewer doesn't show up when I search for it. Nothing related to
"event" shows up in fact.

It should. However, go to Help and Support and search for Event Viewer.

Does the nVidia card have its own memory or is it sharing with main system
memory?

Are the nVidia drivers listed at the nVidia site as fully functional and
final or are they still beta drivers; is there a link at the nVidia site
from which you downloaded the drivers to a site where you can post issues
you are having as you may need to do that. They are still having a lot of
trouble with their drivers and this issue may need to be reported to them.

Event Viewer is under Administrative Tools either on the Start Menu or in
Control Panel.

Start Orb > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer

Someone really needs to come up with a foolproof description of how to
access the Event Viewer...

Its own RAM. The drivers are listed on their site as certified. But thanks
for the heads up about the site to post issues; I'll take a look at it.

LOL. Excellent! :-)

Did find Event Viewer via Start Menu, but don't know what I'm looking
for/at. Sorry for being such a newbie.

Another problem I've had is the search function doesn't locate much when I
use it. Might locate one version of a picture when there are many with the
same name and appended numbers to differentiate (like picture (1).jpg,
picture (2).jpg, etc.).

There is a obvious problem... water has gotten into your machine ;-)

Seriously though - you need to find those event logs...

Keep looking in the Event logs...

It's obviously a display problem since the window is not being rendered
completely. Did this behavior manifest after you updated the display
drivers, or......? If so, I would revert to the older version of the drivers
that were previously installed. You can also try a system restore point to
go back to a time before the problem started.

A screenshot of the problem can be seen at

Ronnie, thanks for your response.

I just moseyed around Nvidia and downloaded, and installed, what's
supposedly the latest and greatest Vista certified non-beta drivers. At
least the most recent ones I could find (June 1). Not a pretty process and
it took me awhile to get things adjusted to the way I want the desktop to
look, but MAYBE it'll be "better." I guess now all I can do is wait and see
if the problem stays or goes away.

Since the sidebar quivered, or flickered on and off too, I also, on a hunch,
uninstalled the Weather Bug gadget. I'd read mixed reports on that one and
decided to deep six it on a hunch and replace it with the AccuWeather one.

I guess time will tell if any of what I changed will actually help.

I found two error messages today; one with Digital Image Pro which crashed,
and another with run32dll.exe, which may have been around the time it first
crashed today. Nothing stated for around the last time it went weird on me,
as far as Error messages go.

I did go back to Nvidia and download, and install, the latest and greatest
non-beta, Vista certified drivers dated June 1. I also, on a hunch since the
sidebar was flickering on and off when this weirdness happened, uninstall
Weather Bug gadget, which I'd read mixed reports about. I now use
AccuWeather gadget instead.

Installing the new Nvidia drivers also uninstalled all the older drivers, so
maybe that'll help too. I guess time will tell, and all I can think of to do
is wait and see.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and help; I appreciate it. And to all
the others who've responded as well, thank you. :-)

I had a similar problem after changing the dpi setting from
96 to 105. The difference was that only certain, not all,
programs opened with the blank and transparent window. After
a few hours spent trying to solve the problem I remembered
that I had changed the dpi setting, so as a last resort I
set it back to 96. Lo, and behold, the problem was gone.
Tried a number of times to duplicate the situation again but
have been unable to. To this day I have no idea why it occurred.

Heh, strange. LOL

I downloaded and installed new video drivers and, so far, the problem hasn't
come back. It's been several hours, so maybe this'll work. My icons aren't
changing their sizes by themselves anymore either, so knock on wood it's all
good now.

I have large size fonts, so if the problem comes back, I'll try changing
that per your experience. Thanks for letting me know that.
