Cannot create desktop shortcut

Something happened to Vista Ultimate 32-bit over the last couple of days. I
installed Windows live, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7, Adobe Reader and Windows
Home Server Console and probably several others that I lost track of.
Anyway, for some reason Vista will not let me create a new desktop shortcut.
I get the message "Windows could not create the shortcut. Check to see if
disk is full." I have 66 GB free on the C: partition so I don't think that
is the issue. I have been bragging about Vista being able to handle
everything I throw at it without a problem - I guess Murphy came to visit
me! A little help is needed. Thanks in advance.

Try a system restore to a date from before the installs.

How about a little help getting to the root cause. I'm not sure a restore
will do anything since I don't know when the problem started or who caused
it. I have numerous Acronis system backups but don't want to go there for a
"minor" problem.

A little new information - when I set up a new user account the problem does
not exist for that user. So... what got screwed up in my old user account
settings and how do I reset the account?

System Restore (not a full disk restore) are typically the best
solution. They are non-threatening and won't damage any data. The
worst you might need to do is re-install an application or two. With
Vista, they often seem to be the only solution to the myriad of
glitches. Your choice.

Ok, I'm now a true believer in the Vista Restore function. Thank you for
making me use it. I went back and used the oldest restore point 1/19/09 and
my problem went away! Back to my original question, who or what caused the
problem - any ideas out there? I'll be a lot more careful going forward on
what I install and try to verify which install triggered the problem. Up to
this point Vista had put me to sleep since I have been using it since "day
2" and have not had any issues.

Ok, I was happy for a week and a half but the same problem came back today.
I have uninstalled Adobe Reader 8 because it had a known bug that kept you
from printing PDF files. I installed Adobe Reader 9 and I could print PDF
files and I could create a desktop shortcut. I installed Windows Home
Server Console this morning and now I cannot create a new desktop shortcut.
I have no idea if Windows Home Server Console installation caused the
problem but it seems suspicious. However, I have installed Windows Home
Server Console on another Vista 64-bit system and do not have the problem.
Other than another "Restore and Hope" - does anybody have a clue what is the
root cause of my problem?

I had a simmiler issue. I would reccomend that you try making a shortcut to
the exe file

It happens to be a Folder I'm trying to make a shortcut to. In reading
through a bunch of Googles on the subject it seems I might have some sort of
policy/permissions problem? Like I said in previous posts, if I create a
new account the problem does not exist in the new account. Also, it is not
Windows Home Server Console or Adobe Acrobat 9 that is causing the problem
since I dropped back (the old Restore routine) and reinstalled with no
problems. However, I have not reinstalled Adobe PhotoShop 7 AND Adobe
Photoshop is not installed on the other Vista System. Again that maybe
just a coincidence but I'll reframe from installing PhotoShop for awhile and
see if the problem comes back. Still looking for the root cause!!
