Opening text files in Word 2007

When opening a .txt file, why does 2k7 frequently open a "File Conversion"
windows to confirm the encoding? I always just hit OK and it works fine. It
never did this in 2k3 and it's a little annoying.

Also, why does Word sometimes say that a .txt file is not a "valid file"? I
then have to open the file in Wordpad, change anything, and then save it.
Word then has no problem with it. Again, a little annoying.

Why you're being prompted... Office button, Word Options, Advanced tab,
General section, Confirm file format conversion on open. If this is turned
off, then you should not be prompted (unless there is an encoding issue).

As to why it sometimes says that a txt file is not valid... I've never
encountered that problem. For some reason, Word 2007 thinks the file is
corrupted. Are those files from some common source that might require
"conversion" using WordPad?
