Opening subdocuments when master opens

Is it possible for a master document to display the subdocuments as soon as
it opens, rather than just the links. Or at least, is there a single button
that will expand them, rather than plowing through a menu and toolbar?
Also, Is there a way to stop people from editing a subdocument from within
the master document?
I'm using Word 2003 on XP

Note that most regular posters here avoid master documents because they tend
to corrupt (see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm).
Usually, it is easier to manage the document as a single file.

You can accomplish something in-between a master document and separate files
by using the INCLUDETEXT field, explained in the article at
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/tblsfldsfms/includetextfieldscontent.htm.

If you really want to keep the text as single files, see this article:
