Subdocument List Numbers Vanish in W2007: What can I do?

In Word 2007 I opened a master document in Word 2003 compatibility mode. This
document contains 11 subdocuments. If I open any subdocuments I can see my
list numbering. If I expand subdocuments from the master, the list numbering
disappears in that view and when the document is printed. This worked
perfectly well in Word 2003. Please help.

The master document facility has never worked properly in any version of
Word and the fact that you managed to get it to work for you in Word 2003
without document corruption should be considered a plus. The facility has
not been fixed in 2007, so I would not put too much store by getting this
conversion to work.

Unfortunately I have no choice. This is a document I have been maintaining
for years and restructuring it would be a massive job. If anyone has any
suggestions as to how I can make it work, please post.
