We have just upgraded our office to Office 2003. Before we were using Office
97. In Word 97, you were able to open several documents in one session of
word, and keep the minimized. Could anyone tell me if this fuction is still
available in Word 2003? I have surfed around, but cannot find anything to
help me.

Word 2003 is still like Word 97, you still open several documents in one
Word session, except that each document gets an incon on the taskbar. I have
grown to like this feature and like it better than the old system. I like
seeing all my documents in the taskbar. Of course, if you always work with 20
documents open at the same time, than it might not be so useful...
If you just want to navigate with the Windows menu in Word:
Tools > Options... > "View" tab > uncheck "Windows in Taskbar"

Go to Tools > Options > View and uncheck "Windows in Taskbar" to get the
same behavior as in Word 97.

Thank You, I tried this and it is working exactly as you had said. Could you
tell me, you said that it gives each document an icon on the task bar. Does
this mean that a new instance of Word is not being opened, it is just the
document being listed? When we see it, it appeard that a new instance was
being opened each time.

No, it is not a new instance of Word, just a new window; in this setup, each
document has its own window.
