Opening ports

Hi,
I am using Windows XP Sp2.
I can receive outlook email on port 110, but I can’t send email on port
25. Comcast who is the internet provider confirmed that port 25 is correct
with an smtp address of “smtp.comcast.netâ€.

When I tried to telnet to smtp.comcast.net, I get an error that says “Could
not open connection to the host or port 25â€. I am using a linksys router and
a westel modem for the cable access. Would there be a problem with the router
and modem blocking email traffic from going out? I have also turned of the
Windows XP firewall.

Any thoughts?

a couple of tests. First, can you resolve the address of the smtp server with
nslookup? Second, can you ping it, either by name or by the resolved IP
address.

If the answer to both of those is yes, I would look for authentication as
being the cause of the problem, as most providers would need a login/password
to connect, and many email clients do not allow this by default.

I would also make sure you are on an ip address provided by comcast; many
isps limit access to their smtp server to their own address space to cut
spammers.

Mitch - assuming you are using Outlook vs. Outlook Express it may be
worthwhile checking the outgoing server authentication (following is
lengthy): Tools>Email accts>E-mail select view or change...>Next>Account
usually POP3Comcast>Change>more settings>outgoing server tab - should be
unchecked for Comcast.
