hi

I have various outlook 2003 sp1 users who are running in cached mode
(our exchange server is 2003 enterprise version )with all hotfixes and
on some laptops every time a user closes outlook and reopens it again
the following dialog box appears:

the date file "user A" was not closed properly.

the file is being checked for problems.

i have read some posts which say this is normal behaviour but i don't
think it is, if you close outlook properly there should be no reason
for this to happen, also some users have very large mailboxes (4gb+)
and it sometimes takes 15 minutes for this process to complete.

does anyone have an idea where to start looking to try and fix this?
or does anyone else has the same problem

thanks

Tell the user to wait and allow enought time between the time they close
Outlook and the time they shut down or standby Windows. Outlook needs time
to close the connections for the .ost file.

Thanks

the users only close outlook and not windows, and it still seems to
happen, i created a new outlook profile and downloaded my mailbox onto
it which is about 1gb in size (1.6gb ost file) and this did the same
thing, i closed it and outlook just shut it down.

i then tried a send/receive setting so it synchs upon closing outlook
and this solved the issue for my outlook profile, but not for the other
user with the 4gb mailbox, i must admit that out of 10 closures it
opened up without problems about twice, but all the other times it went
thru the check ost file process.

any ideas?

thanks

quick update

i decided to remove the cached mode and just do a good old offline copy
of most of the data folders, i synched the offline file (4.s gb ost
file) , closed outlook, disconnected from the network and opened the
outlook file again and worked in offline mode without any problems

i closed outlook, reconnected to the network, opened up outlook and it
brought up the same dialog box of the data file " " was not closed
properly, the file is being checked for problems.

so it really does not matter whether you are working in cached mode or
in online and have a offline copy, the same error occurs.

i have decided to get a archiving solution like KVS vault and load off
the majority of peoples messages to this as i believe smaller mailboxes
do not cuase this type of problem.

just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue with outlook 2003
and ost files

thanks again
